Hi, my 6 year old Canon 60D could change aperture while shooting video. I'm confused why I haven't been able to do it with my cutting edge video spec'd GX85. Am I missing some setting in the menu?

Thanks

Flick the mode dial to the dedicated video mode, then select your desired mode in the video menu A,S,P,M

Once selected you can then change the aperture/shutter speed/ISO settings from the onscreen tabular menus.

This is why serious video is done with cine lenses. The aperture control is always on the lens and many times is continuous rather than in steps.

That said, who in the world is a serious videographer? Certainly not me.

I wouldn't have known if you haven't mention it - that great, dedicated video function of the little panny, with the extra priviledge of the big release button with some other cute tricks I'm very keen of, and I truly dig you for that!

I used to tape with Sony Nex 6, - which was indeed a fine, little, decent cam for its time and buck, but due to the Sony's irresponsible placement of the video release button - hidden somewhere on the side of the body and very hard to release, so I never knew if I was actually recording - I had the mandatory obligation to cut away the first and the last second from every single movie I've recorded with it, which was - aside of IBIS - the main reason for going Lumix, which cares so much more about the video features. Sony is foolishly keeping the bad video release knob tradition even on the A6500, which might be the most capable compact camera with a little drawback not only I can't stand at all.

Thanks, so will I be able to change the aperture while the camera is shooting (i.e. after I press record)?

There are 2 types of video modes on GX85 (also most later pany models).
  1. A full automatic mode started and stopped by the little "Red" button anytime having the Dial Mode still in a Still shooting mode, or
  2. Creative Video Mode ("M/Video") be selected on the Mode Dial then start to shoot by either the little "Red" button or by the shutter?
1) would be the simplest mode in full auto (commonly available for every class of cameras) that we have given full control to the camera. Good for instant switching into video in the middle of still shooting. Nothing need to be done in advance to switch from still to video mode.

(P.S. I found iA+ and this full automatic video mode: making a full auto mode more intelligent, might deliver a better result than full auto video alone.)

2) there is P/S/A/M like still shooting allowing shooter a full control on the 3 exposure parameters (f/stop, shutter speed/ISO) plus Exposure Compensation for fine tuning. What more a proper videocam could offer?

In M of M/Video, you can change setting in the middle of the shooting. But under P/A/S of M/Video, you can only set EC to adjust the exposure.

Sorry I meant adjusting the aperture while the video is being shot (after pressing the record button)
If you selected the Creative Video Mode on the Mode Dial then start video (by the red button or by the shutter), you can adjust f/stop in A, or shutter speed in S together with EC by the front and back wheel in the middle of video shooting.
