K-3IIs perhaps?
Am I alone in thinking that Pentax's model numbering is completely without any logic at all? Think:
  • K-3/K-30, suggestive of a relationship which isn't there.
  • K-70 without a K-7.
  • No distinctive model numbering system for FF - will be the K-2 be APS-C or FF?

no -- the 's' only distinguished between lack of AA filter and having one. None of the K-3 series have an AA filter.

Nikon and Canon are the same. Look at the 6d (FF low tier) vs the 7d (Crop sports) or the D5 (FF sports) D500 (FF sports) D5000 (Crop mid tier)

I think the idea is to confuse (purposely confuse) the buyer. Perhaps it is easier to upsell when it is difficult to compare or know what to compare?

That was the case with 5 series. In 3 series "s" might mean something else. What - we will find out in due course

er there WAS a K7. Successor to the K10 and identical body and controls to the K5.

"K-3 Super" would be my pick.

It's been odd having had a K10, K7, K5 and K5IIs (I skipped the K3) and now K1. K9 sounds like a dog, but they skipped the even numbers ...

The successor to the K-1 has no place to go but down, so it will be the K-2. That means the K-3 successor must be the K-4.

What about adding a 1 for the flagship APS-C like k11.k12. K13. K14 and so on.

K1 for full frame k1+for the flagship APS-C and k0+for the mirrorless.

It would only add confusion that would not benefit the company or the end user to re-use labeled in a different manner so close to product cycles.

The probability of them re-using the s as you indicate has the same probability of a cow sprouting skis on their hooves and becoming a Super G champion.

Afaik the 4 means bad luck. I do not remember any version 4 of any japanese software.

As Pentax is the Master of odd numbers, everything might Happen. My guess is K-3 III.

I think they avoid it too, but Nikon did introduce a D4 before..

K-3 III 'Kay Three Three' sounds odd to me. 'Kay Three Mark Three' doesn't sound much better imo.

They can call it 'shamalamadingdongbluemoon' if they want to, as long as it performs better than the K-3 II in DR and high ISO and comes with a flip screen, as far as I'm concerned. :-D

Don't wrongly assume that if something confuses you it also necessarily confuses others

If it's another iteration of the K-3, it will probably use the same sensor - which means that DR and high ISO will be unchanged.

To be totally honest, I really don't care how the successor will be called... I'm so much excited about the fact that there will be, at last, a successor to the K3, so the name thing is the last of my concerns... So, come on Pentax, bring us the D500 killer!! :-)
