Eye-One (or i1) Calibrator question

I have an older type GretagMacbeth Eye-One Photo kit. I have never used it before on my windows 10 (64bit) system and now I'm in doubt if it will work at all.

I started out with the original cd-rom that came with it. It installed the 'Eye-One match' program nicely. But the software is not detecting the calibrator. Also, in the device manager, I see an exclamation mark, indicating a problem. I'm betting it's an USB driver issue.

After that, I searched the X-rite website and under the 'out of production' part, I couldn't really find a perfect match. The closest match (when judged from the picture) is this:
http://www.xrite.com/service-support/product-support/calibration-solutions/i1Basic

Here, I found a newer version of the i1 match software (version 3.6.2). However, the problem remains the same. The device is not detected on my computer.

Basically my question is: Will this ever work, or is the tool simply too old? If it can still work, how do I make it so?

Hoping someone can help, as it was a beautiful and expensive piece of kit.

My camera club had (has) one of these and I have had numerous calls from people since W10 came out saying that either they can't get it to work at all - your issue - or that when they have created a profile then the printer and screen do not match.

i know that using it under W7 using 3.6.2 it worked a treat profiling printers and screens with ease, however I have zero faith in the results under W10 when you can get it to work. I did get it to run at home after a lot of frustration but the screen didn't look right and reproducing with a colormunki showed the difference very clearly.

i now just tell people that the Eye1 doesn't work under W10 and that using no profile, or the default profile, is better than using a profile which isn't consistent.

sorry, I will watch this thread with interest and see if anyone else had made it work correctly 100% of the time under W10.

You could try if you can get it to work with 3rd part software such as https://displaycal.net/ http://argyllcms.com

However, considerable variation between devices is reported, and they're not well suited to modern wide-gamut displays.

My Story...

Used the i1Display Pro successfully with Win 7 for three years without incident or problems

Upon upgrading to Win10 (Clean install) it ceased working.

Everything seemed to work OK until it came time to read the patches when it refused to recognise the instrument.

Tried all sorts of remedies - updating drivers, reinstalling etc, as Xrite likes to promote the illusion it is compatible with Win 10.

Heard heard all sorts of bad things about Xrite tech support, but in desperation finally called their help line.

I was pleasantly surprised with the efficiency and help from their tech support personnel.

After much involved diagnostic procedures which included having to download proprietary software from their website, they gave me the bad news. My 3 year old i1Display Pro was not compatible with Win 10 due to some internal compatibility issues.

The good news was that the Product manager would replace it as good will gesture, and all I had to do was return it for exchange. They gave me a RMA and I returned it.

The bad news - that was six weeks ago and so far nothing!

Now I don't have my i1Dispaly pro that at least worked with Win7, or theoretically could be used with third party software.

I am living in hope that a replacement will arrive in due course.
