If the rumor is true, that makes sense. Canon's previous scheme of having extremely similar T6i/T6s models didn't make much sense to me.

It seems they want to create more of a gap than there is between the 750D and 760D (because why buy the 750D for so little saving) but there's not a lot of room to position a 77D under the 80D or the t7I (850D?) above the 750D. I'm guessing the 77D might be an 80D with lower build quality and no weather sealing.

Yeah, we have that one in M5 for price which is now significantly higher than what 80D costs :-D :-D.

So is this just the 770 d and a typo or is another 80d / 70d type camera rumored

I would love it if 77d was something like a 80d with 4k.

Canon has the same problem above the 80D, the 7DII is only a better camera for specific uses. Really the only thing I can confidently predict about the 10 new Canon models expected this month is that they will trigger a chorus of complaint about not having 4K. I'd bet my Android tablet on that.

I belive the 77D will supercede the 760D/T6s, sitting below the 80D and above the expected 800D.

The two digit numbering series has traditionally been for the "Enthusiast" level bodies.
Having gone from the 70D to the 80D it's unlikely thay are going to go backwards to 77D.
Far more likely it will be an evolution of the "Entry Level" DSLR's with a three didgit designation, like EOS 770D

Images are out, it is the 77D.

I was wrong!

First time Canon have released a DSLR with a lower number than a preceding model!
Looks quite useful, but I can't help wondering exactly what market segment it's aimed at.

It's essentially the T6i / T6s replacements.

Just that the one with the top screen and thumb wheel is the 77D the second digit differentiating it from the enthusiast level X0D

Most importantly both use DPAF and are only 1fps lower than the next model which, if priced well will make them very appealing for videographers.

Of course that doesn't matter because the only thing you'll hear after official reviews are that it sucks because it doesn't have 4K video, laughably people would wet themselves over even a bad implementation with terrible rolling shutter like the Sony but complain over something no one truly 'needs' yet in the current marketplace of editing, storage and viewing equipment.

The pricing and availability of 4k displays is making a lack of 4k recording a genuine concern for long term use. That, and things like my 3 year old phone being capable of it to some degree. I'm personally bit even interested in it, but there's no ignoring the fact that 4k is not in its infancy and isn't going away.

Fully agree (and so does Jared Polin in his M5 review). I still haven't found a use for 1080 so I can't imagine what I'd do with 4K.

This is getting silly, who wants another not so good AF system. Either buy an 80D or a 70D, and have done with it. Never understood the idea of a XXXD system like t5i, t6i having some sub-par AF when for a $100 more you get DPAF like on a 70D.

If they truly want to add value, why not

- add: focus peaking, zebras, PIP focus box, and 10bit raw video. All of that can be had with just software updates, using an existing model.

They could also add a crop mode for 4k/60fps video. That can be done without hardware changes using existing card writer / throughput at the t6i speed.

I think Canon, hates software features.

Both new ones have DPAF.

Focus should be as good as the 80D and better than the 70D

Yep. Apart from weather sealing there's not a lot lacking from the 77D. Canon is going to force itself to come out with a 90D fairly soon, which in turn will force them to come out with the 7DIII.

...for the 90D?

1. viewfinder (brighter and larger magnification)
2. fps
3. I imagine shutter lag and viewfinder blackout are worse.
4. top shutter speed 1/4000 versus 1/8000
5. headphone jack
6. arguably better construction
7. better ergonomics on the 80D with the top panel haptic buttons.
