Hi im wanting to buy my first new Leica that i plan on keeping forever. Then plan on passing it down when im old and blind. I dont want to keep on buying a new camera every few years or so. I want one and done. I have a Fujifilm XT2 for my normal photography that will probably be replaced in a few years but i want one film camera to last foreverI will then place a light meter on top of the camera that can be replaced much easier. I know not having a light meter built in will take much longer for pictures but for speed i have my Fuji, i rather have the engagement in the Leica for film. My main question is do you think 20 years from now a MP will last as long and have just as much maintenance as the M-A?

I had two MP for quite some time, as well as a M6 Millennium, various M2, M3. Not a problem with any of these. I never got a M7, and for a reason. Meter is pretty much a personal preference, someone prefers it in camera, someone external. In either case, after a little practice you will not need one anyway. What makes the difference for me is mechanical shutter vs electronic shutter: hence my never getting a M7. Mechanical cameras last forever and can pretty much be repaired forever, even if the MP's meter should ever fail - electronic shutters, on the other hand, are trickier, and I am not sure there will be parts in 20 years from now.

So, my suggestion is to decide whether you are a built-in meter kinda guy or an external meter guy, and proceed accordingly: you will be very happy with either cameras. As someone mentioned, keep in mind that an MP without battery is basically a M-A, so choosing an MP you'd get the best of both worlds.

Best regards,

Vieri
