I'm doing a trip to NY and I could use some tips. Where are the cheapest stores selling 717's in New York?

Oh, and does anyone know if Sony has a world-wide warranty for its digital cameras (I'm taking the camera with me back to Finland [Europe])?

Thanks.

jokke,

Do not go to the "cheapest" stores in NYC. When you see a store in NYC advertising the lowest price that usually is an indicator of whose the biggest crook. The three best camera stores in NYC (the prices are fair but not the lowest) are BH Photo, Adorama, and J&R Music World.

Thaks, but those stores are way too expensive. I rather order from Germany and I dont even need to buy a new charger or worry about the warranty. The price there is also around 1000 euro, so I'm looking a price closer to 800-900$.

You will not find a reputable bricks & mortar supplier in NYC any cheaper than these three. Also, a word of warning, if you do buy a US camera, Sony Europe will not recognise the warranty. You are probably better off paying a little extra. I see http://www.pixmania.de ; (based in Paris) are selling the 717 for €1027 including a two year warranty. I bought my 717 from their UK site & had no problem.

Just a suggestion

Also remember if you buy in nyc, you will have to pay tax. Tax in nyc is 81/2%. If you pay $850, you will have to pay $72.25 in tax.

Thanks for the warning. If the US warranty really does not apply in Europe, it's plan B for me. Pixmania is actually one of my backup stores, seems that the price has dropped from the last week's 1042€. Maybe it'll be even cheaper next week. :-)

By the way, does that 2-year-warranty work like I can have the camera repaired in Finland. Hopefully, cos' I really wouldn't wanna send the camera back to pixmania.

I was in B&H last week (even if you don't buy anything there, you MUST see the store!), and they had the 717 for 899. As another poster mentioned, don't forget about the sales tax. You might be better off ordering it from their website; they're offering free shipping on this item, and you'll have no NY tax.

I agree with Harry about the three stores mentioned; the others are scam artists.

The first year is the standard Sony European warranty. You can get the camera repaired anywhere. The second year you have to return it to Pixmania.

Hope this helps

Leigh,

You'll find they practise various sleeze tatics. First you have grey market items. If its not grey market they will pitch a "kit" containing cheap filters, MS, and other accessories for an outlandish price. If you refuse the kit the camera turns to be "out of stock". Another tactic is to sell you just the camera and then to sell you the accessories that normally come with the camera.
