Hi all,

Thinking about getting the x2 TC for my 50-140, specifically to use at the long end (420mm equiv) wide open.

Has anyone seen or done a comparison between this setup and cropping + resizing a shot from the zoom alone?

Thanks in advance,

pA

I guess not then.

if I get the TC I might do the comparison for fun.

I only have the 1.4x so can't comment own the 2x, but the advantages of the tc to me are seeing the image in the viewfinder and not throwing away all the detail that you'd discard when you crop.

I only have the 1,4 TC. That wokrs really well. Don't notice that the AF gets slower and the picure quality is very close to the result without TC.

I have not used the 2 TC but it might be rather good. I think you should give at try.

I tested the 50-140 w/2x, at full telephoto, against the 55-200, again at full tele but cropped for a 280mm field of view, and the 50-140/2x shot clearly had more detail. I'm sure a 140mm shot from the 50-140 would fare no better.

I will say, however, that the 50-140/2x combo is at it's worst in low-contrast scenes. It's possible a cropped shot in that situation could be better, but I've not specifically tested that.

Here are some 2x shots from a 50-140. If you click into the size, you can see full-sized JPGS.

Hey George, thanks very much for those examples - very useful, and sharper than I expected.

Very tempted now.

I do think the 2.0x is a bit of a "fair weather freind." If you shoot a lot of low contrast stuff - like under a forest canopy - it is more likely to dissapoint, IME. But for a well-lit subject, the results are quite good, as you have seen. Particularly if you have a new sensor and are not trying to make super large prints.
