380ex or 420ex

I am going to buy a flash for G3. Should I buy 380ex or 420ex. The reason buying it is because I am not happy with performance of the builtin flash.
Somebody told me that 420ex will be too bright for indoor (bedroom) use.

Can anybody adivise on this please?

380ex is an old model, 420ex is a new one. They have mostly the same features, 420ex is more powerful and has swivel head in addition to tilt provided by 380ex. I would certainly recommend buying the 420ex.

Neither one is too bright, since the flash energy is controlled by the camera. If in doubt, use some sort of flash diffuser (Sto-fen, mini softbox, etc).

If money isn't an issue go for the 420ex, the swivel will allow you to bounce the flash off side walls as well as the roof.

I'm using 420ex (indoor shots only, so far) and sometimes (extreme conditions he he I wish I had 550 EX !!! - more power is greater bounce effect. Speaking about bounce 380EX DOES NOT allow you to bounce so it's out of question.

Buy either 420ex or 550 ex.

As far as i know the 380 EX does allow you to bounce.....
