Has anybody tried producing the same size image with and without
the converter ?
The reason I ask is because I prefer the zoom range with the converter
on, and would rather leave it on and not have the hassle of fitting and
removing it when out and about.(could drop it)
What I'm not sure of, is, will there be a noticable difference in quality
in the overlapping focal lengths ?

I wouldn't expect there to be any clearly noticeable degradation in image quality if you leave it on. I think it is more a question of preference. If the protruding converter doesn't bother you, then it is probably ok.

I have only seen the adapter in ads, does it have a thread also? What about a cap?

I might be wrong here, but I'm pretty sure that the wide angle conversion lens is meant to be used only with the camera's own lens at maximum wide setting (35mm in this case). This means that you unfortunately don't have a "zoom range" with the wide angle attached - but a fixed focal length at 24mm.
Maybe someone who has the equipment or anyone else in the know can confirm this?

Got my converter and did a simple comparison, image quality is exellent, indistinguishable on my vdu.
Converter is larger than I expected, front element is almost 4" diameter.
The 4 x zoom range is still maintained i.e. 24.5mm - 98mm.
Good job I have the 420ex flash, shadow from converter when using
camera flash is enormous.
