HI guys,

I'm planning to buy a used SEL16F28 16mm f2.8 from eBay for around $175. Purchased an a6300 recently and this is my first time buying a used lens. Sellers are stating the quality of optics, performance and appearance in the description. Assuming they are telling the truth,

1. Is there anything else I need to worry about?

2. Can anyone recommend me a good seller ?

Thanks in advance

Remember, shopping on eBay is like the wild west. If you don't know what you're doing you'll likely get shot.

Here are a few eBay tips for not only buying used lens but just about anything else.
  • Carefully read the description of the item being sold. (Occasionally you'll find an item being sold as parts).
  • Stick with items listed as, "Excellent Condition". I've found that items which have been listed as, "working, tested, works perfectly" are more likely to have hidden faults.
  • Always check the reputation of the seller. Take a look at the positive and negative reviews received in the past year. Stay away from sellers with more than 10 negative reviews within 6 months. Additionally see if the seller bothered to respond to the negative reviews left or tried to resolve the problem with the sale.
  • Stick with sellers with a rating of 99.8% and above.
  • Always communicate with the seller to find out any additional details about the lens/item being sold. Sellers who readily answer any questions are generally better persons to deal with.
There's not much else I can think of but I hope I was able to help.

If you can wait these will probably be on sale

Which lens did you get? 16-50?

The 16 2.8 is a meh lens. SOME on here would say that about every sony lens. THEY would be right about the 16 2.8. why do you want it?
2. Can anyone recommend me a good seller ?

Thanks in advance
Look at the Sigma 19 2.8. if it needs to be wider then look at manual focus lenses or accept the 16. Read some reviews and find pics on FLIKR. I lt is only slightly faster than the kit lens and optically the kit lens may be a touch better at 16. 16 is the weakest FL on the kit by far

To the OP: You are obviously not "planning" to buy on e-Bay if you are asking all of these questions. I suggest dealing with Adorama, B&H, or KEH dealers - or even go on Amazon - but I would buy from a firm rather than an individual. Eventually one of them will offer the same lens. I buy Exc+, L[ike]N[ew], or D[emo] used from them repeatedly and have never had to return an item. In fact, the lenses show up usually better than they are rated.

Thanks for the tips PSCL1. Unfortunatelu I'm from Sri Lanka and the only option is eBay. (Yes the so called "Sony dealers" in here do not have that lens).

Hi golfhov

Yes I got it with the kit (16-50). I need a wide angle + bright lens for landscape and light astro photography. Sigma 19mm is a nice lens. What is your opinion on Sony 20mm with a converter?

Another option is to keep the kit lens for day time landscapes and to buy a Samyang 12mm isn't it?

It is... if you are after optiCal quality this is a good lens. not very wide tho
What is your opinion on Sony 20mm with a converter?
The 20 is a decent lens. with the converters it slows down and loses a bit

The samyang is quite like for night photograpghy.

Thanks for the tips. Really appreciate your help. I've decided not to go with the 16mm. It will be either 20mm or the 19mm. Will buy a 12mm later for sure.

I wasn't trying to be rude but this lens I found very disappointing. Unless that is you want a wide angle pancake that is affordable. it just isn't that great and the kit lens is cheaper, only slightly slower, may actually be slightly better quality, is stabilized, and only slightly larger
It will be either 20mm or the 19mm.
The 19 is probably a little better but both fine and affordable

For your astro? makes sense. in the meantime you can try with what you have a wide angle lens thay is sharp wide open and fast is ideal. astro is a tough subjecr

+1. Not the same lens but I just bought the Sony F4.0 18-105mm lens for my A6000 from Adorama. The price was fair. It was rated D(demo). It came in a original box with all the normal stuff in it. I have 30 days to return it if I do not like it (so far I like it) or it has problems.

IMHO - much better than buying on e-Bay unless the e-Bay lens is very cheap and then I would suspect problems. Now if you found one on your local Craig's List, I might cconsider it but not on e-Bay.

Hi Again,

I need one last help. Do you guys see any difference between below two lenses? if not why do they have different "Trending At" values? I contacted the seller of the first (cheaper) one and he confirmed that its brand new, for sone e and made in Japan.

Hi Again,

I need one last help. Do you guys see any difference between below two lenses6?
No. you can see the second one actally is an "a" also. look at box
if not why do they have different "Trending At" values?
Label. if one label or item description is slightly different it can lead to price discrepancies
I know some of the sigMA designs have changed slightly but these seem to be identical. just labeled differently

Thanks Again golfhov.

I'll g for the cheaper one. Top rated seller.

One last note is I think all the lenses in that line have a floating element. while the power is off you will hear it move freely. Nothing is broken
