I was playing around with my 717 today shooting some videos. Believe me, I have not use this feature before. To my surprise when I review the movies, all showed 25fps.

When I purchased the F717, I remember Steve's and Phils review both stated that at MPEG HQX mode we can only achieve 15fps(16fps in Phils's). So I was tricked to believe that the HQX mode still limited to 15fps. I cannot find any description on the manual with regard to fps in each of the movies mode.

Is this a new bug in a nice way? or everybodyelse also get 25fps in HQX? Just curious. I might start using more of the movies mode if the camera if the rsult is that good.

P.S. I just found out today that I can adjust the EV setting in movies mode. It is hidden until I press the EV compensation button.

Hey there, S.M.

Yes, the file will report back 25fps. However, there is some kind of unusual "frame doubling" going on with the Sony MPEG movies. I'm not sure of what the reason is for it, exactly (maybe something to do with synching with the audio transport?), but the movie is really traveling along at a rate of somewhere between 12-15 fps. Hence, Phil's numbers.

So, it's not a bug. It's just the way the implement their movie mode. It's always been that way even before the EX and the HQX modes came around.

Lots of neat things to like with the Sony movies besides the continuous streaming to stick. You get constant active focus, white balance adjustment, EV adjustments, etc. Most other movie modes in other cameras don't offer all of that at the same time.

I was expecting a "better" explanation..:-)) Probabaly on the next 7x7 or with the new speed of MSPro...

Yes, the zooming, EV, WB, constant focus is nice. I will try to use the movies mode more often to see if I can like it or not. Currently 6 minutes a pop but who knows I will be able to get the Pro.

I'll be very honest with you.

I never use the HQX mode. The reason is because once I've recorded the movie in ANY mode, I intend to edit it and resave it to a different format than MPEG anyway, for streaming on the web or for e-mail.

Perhaps if I was writing to DVD or to a VCD, I might want the higher framerate along with the longer recording times. But generally, I'm doing more stuff with the movies on the Net. So....
