Love the features and body size of the new A6500. Looks like it might fit into a large pocket, like a coat pocket or those on my cargo pants.

But it would need a smaller size lens than that used in DPR's review. Maybe a prime or a small zoom? I'm thinking a walk-about lens or lens for event photography (parades, car shows, county fairs, etc). Any lens suggestions?

Or maybe I'm fooling myself thinking the A6500 could be a pocket-able camera. How say you?

FE 35mm 2.8 or E 35mm 1.8 OSS

There are pancakes but I prefer to stay away from them.

As above, love the size of my sel20mm 2.8 on my A6000, very pocketable with the sel50 1.8 doable in a coat pocket :)

Smallest lens would be the E20 (or E16 if you need wider), as a fixed prime.

Next smallest would be the E1650 (collapsed).

Neither will fit in a pocket, the A6xxx body is still too large.

The A5100 with either lens will fit in a pocket of a jacket, but not a pants pocket.

If you like a belt-clip solution, the A5100 is significantly smaller than the A6x00 camera. I have pouches for both, and you can check the difference online. Both barely fit:

Dashpoint 20 - holds A5100+E1650

Dashpoint 20 - holds A5100+E1650

Dashpoint 30 - holds A6x00+E1650

If you want something pocket size, I recommend you look at the new Sony RX100 Mark V

A6000 was winter coat pocketable with most of the primes as long as you have decent size coat pockets. I've had the SEL24, SEL35 and SEL50 on it with lens hoods.

But on jackets with small pockets, it is also a bit of a tight fit for some of the primes, in which case the kit lens might be a better option.

Its a tight fit, but I put the A6000 with 18-55mm lens in my pocket.

There are only two options. The 20mm f2.8 is tiny and the IQ is superb given its form-factor. I can recommend it w/o qualification. The images are very pleasing, but you'll have to deal with a fixed focus lens (heard of zoom-by-walking?).

Then there is them much maligned 16-50 kit lens - a tad bigger, IQ is variable (sometimes mediocre, sometimes decent) but considering its form factor -- it is truly an engineering masterpiece and with zoom, OSS, etc. it is very flexible; the images are generally ok, but never-to my eye-never gorgeous. Certainly good for snap-shots and situations where minimal form factor is essential (i use it for mountaineering, for example).

I own both and each has its place ... however, you should understand that these small pancake lenses are all about tradeoffs ...

Another alternative: The RX100 series is more compact, but less flexible than a interchangeable lens camera.

ps: cool aviation photos

with the kit lens 16-50 it will fit in a big pocket.. but you would get the same IQ for alot less money from the RX100 and it will easily fit in any pocket.

Entirely true. The only reason to buy an A6XXX is if you want the flexibility of an interchangeable lens camera (or perhaps need better low light performance than the RX100).
