Understanding the iPhone 7 Plus camera "System"

With good light there is no need for stock camera app.

Lightroom DNG is the way to go and also shoots the tele lens.

Developer of the Cortex Camera is currently working with IOS 10 raw API.

The poor quality currently is because Cortex uses images from Apple's ISP that has already ruined the image with noise reduction and sharpening.

When he gets Cortex Camera up to date it should produce similar results as LG G4 when he can use raw data from the censor. And thats what I'm waiting for.

Here are couple of 7 Plus shots.

Lightroom DNG, 56mm f2.8, edited to taste.

HI,

I read with interest your post, I am curious about the dual iphone camera "magic" as you put it. question:

if I chose either raw (in a secondary camera app) or if I select the 2X (56mm lens) in the apple camera app, does the dual camera "magic" will NOT take place? do I understand correctly that in order for this to work, I need to shoot in jpeg and use the wide angle lens in the apple camera app? thanks very much.

You have to shoot in the camera's "portrait" mode, and the processed image is only available as a final JPEG. The "magic" is all being done in the camera's processing chip.

Just a pity Apple have opted for such a heavy handed processing and NR approach with these 12 mp sensors...hence the 'magic' being less photographic than it is gimmicky :)

Apart from the post processing "portrait mode", the 60mm lens will have a somewhat shallower depth of field than the 30mm lens.
