DxO review of the K-1 is published. It is the 4th ranked of all cameras with 96 score.

Nice! At almost half the price the other 2 are selling for. For any given ISO (at least up to 25000) it has BETTER DR than the other 2, and better ISO.

And that's without pixel-shift (+2 stops DR, more rez).

It's such a bargain!!!

:D

Am I reading the DR chart correctly? From what I gather, they are saying the K-1 at ISO 100 has similar DR to the D810 at ISO 50 !?

yes, that is correct: almost the same DR.

They still put the D810 above the K-1. And if you look at the samples on this site, pushed 6 stops, you see that the D810 takes on a pink hue in its pushed blacks, while the Pentax stays black/grey.

Good to see it score well, as expected. I'd now like to see DXO test some lenses on the K-1. Thanks for sharing.

While it is nice to have our suspicions verified, most of us already could tell just from using ours that the K-1 would score well, especially in DR.

I've got shots that were takin in such high contrast noon day sun, that I goofed around and ended up trying to underexpose almost 5 stops!!!! to not blow the highlights, where the remainder of the photo was just plain dark, never mind shadowed. When I got home, the K-1 RAW allowed me to push the rest of the photo up to meet the highlights where they should be and still have what I would call an above average photo result with little to no noise. Amazing camera, and I remain in awe of what it can do.

(don't ask why I was shooting at ISO400, heh, I was too busy looking at histograms and didn't notice)

An excellent image-making machine that offers perhaps the best high-resolution + low-light-perf combination out there. And for $1800.... which wasn't supposed to be possible for Pentax according to some .. ;)
It is possible to deliver K-1 at such a price. But that low price comes at a high price of little to no visible media presence (keeps userbase small), fewer service depots, slow lens development and slow improvement of future cameras in areas that need improvement.

Take your pick:
  • K-1 at $1800 and little to no financing of necessary goodies ;
  • K-1 at $2800 and through that financing of many goodies mentioned above.
We should be careful what we wish for...

the score is great and exactly what I expected given that it shares the superb Sony 36Mp sensor with the Nikon and Sony full-frame competition. There is no need for Pentatians to wish for a "better" score. The camera "as is" will exceed 99% of most photographer's needs. It is for this very reason that switching from my D800 to the K-1 doesn't yet make sense as the IQ is basically the same. My current Nikon FX system meets all my requirements. As does my Pentax K-3ii system. So I'm currently happy using both. If and when the Pentax "system" makes it easy to make the switch, then I will have no issue leaving Nikon behind. In the meantime, the DxOmark proves beyond the shadow a doubt that the K-1 is a superb camera. Don't fret the 1 or 2 point difference: it amounts to nothing.

Now that they have done the review let's hope that the K-1 module for OPTICS Pro 11 will be added soon.

The only shadow for the K1 is the AF , including the AF speed in the lenses... So it may score higher in sports but in the field it is another story because of the above.

And I use Pentax...

In the field it seems good - the af on the new lenses is as fast to lock as I am to point - tracking in live view: does anyone actually shoot sports this way?

I am sure all the testers are correct about the AF needing improvement - its just that for me it works - would like to see eye af tracking in next model for portraits.

Kind regards,

Brett

Remarkable result for the K-1!

Let's give it up for the the Pentax engineers who -- once again -- did a marvellous job of getting the most out of the sensor.

Well done, Ricoh!

Leave it to "Triplet Perar" to rain on the Pentax parade whenever possible.

The one and only reason to switch: FA 31mm limited ;-)
