I'm trying to get this new laptop set up and get used to using it. But, something or some setting is really goofing me up. The magnification and orientation of the screen will change, willy nilly, seemingly without cause.

This phenomena seems to be tied to the mouse touchpad, in that I've sometimes noticed that passing my hand over the touchpad will make the screen change and jump around.

I'm assuming that this is a Lenovo "feature" that can be turned off. Anyone know where to find that switch? I can't use the computer the way it is now, so I've got to figure out how to make the screen fit full size, without changing on its own.

thanks

Kerry

I have the same thing going on with the HP I use for my morning news and first email reading with very strong coffee. You might see a Synaptics TouchPad driver taking care of the pad. There seems to be no way to stop the behaviour, like it is, I've tried many times but no avail.

If you go into Control Panel, you should find one icon relating to input devices - or even just Mouse or Touchpad. It is then possible to change the characteristics in sense can make it non-active for touching or near-touching. Of course, will depend on whether you have "mouse keys" as sometimes on later touchpads, the pad itself becomes the mouse key with left-right touches of slightly harder pressing and you can normally change the pressure settings from Light to Hard. Most touchpads have areas that can be de-activated too. I did this all on an old IBM Laptop (basis for the Lenovo brand) so the facility is in there somewhere. Hope this helps you find the appropriate adjustment but it is there.

There should also be an online manual with more info - just google search for your model with manual added at end.

Once, a long time ago, I activated this feature in my wife's Lenovo laptop. It's de-activated the same way it's activated. Lenovo provides features to circle one finger, another to zoom larger & smaller by moving apart or moving together two fingers, and a feature to scroll using three fingers. As I recall, all the Lenovos work basically the same way. You just have to putz around looking for it. But, I think it goes like this,,,In Control Panel go to Mouse -> UltraNav -> TouchPad Settings -> Application Gestures -> Pinch Zoom -> uncheck the Enable Pinch Zoom box.

By the way, you may be finding that these movements work in some programs; but, not in others. That's because, whatever program you are in, at the moment, must "support" these Lenovo features. Otherwise, nothing happens when you manipulate your fingers, making you think that something is wrong with your machine.

What does your User Guide Say? Have you searched the Lenovo Support site for information? You can download the User Guide there although your laptop probably has a Help app with it installed? Have you read that yet?

You need to tell us what model of laptop, programs, OS version, etc.

Some Lenovo's have a Motion Control capability through the web cam. Read here:

Lenovo Motion Control

Does your laptop have this? It should stay so on the box or especially in the User Guide & the UG should tell you how to use it or to turn it off via the settings withing the app.

Or restrict what can access the web camera. Please don't be so vague in your request for help?

Thanks for the info, it helped me zero in on the issue.

Synaptics is controlling the touchpad and it has all of these goofy "features" that were on by default.

I turned off all of the ones that allowed me to do so and it fixed most of the issues that I had, especially that darned flying desktop where whatever was on top would fly around the desktop and even off of the screen....

I still have enlarged text/screen, where I need to scroll horizontally to see all of the info, like on this page.

I'll try to detail all of those switches later, so someone else with this problem can more easily fix it.

thanks again

You need to provide more information, like the year, make, and model of the laptop.
Sorry. This is a brand new laptop, an Ideapad 700. The problem comes from the Synaptics Touchpad and software that the laptop uses.

thanks

You are welcome. I'm sorry I didn't think to mention it before (until you noticed it); but it's even easier to fix by simply removing the Synaptics program. Without that in the computer, none of those features will function.

Glad you solved it. Fortunately for me, my son is IT Director of his own small business tech company. My problems are an email and remote hookup away. I have no idea where he picked up his genius for this stuff. Certainly not from me. But, it's good that I can share some of the morsels I've picked up over the years.

No need to be sorry. You helped me zero in on the issue, which is what I needed.

I thought about doing that, but then how does the touchpad work without the drivers provided by the Synaptics software?

thanks

You could try installing Touchpad Blocker. It has repaired a myriad of sins for me, and I have it installed on several laptops including 2 Lenovo laptops.
