  • I hate to be the first one to post this, but someone else has also confirmed this to be happening with theirs. Took a handful of shots with my new 5d mark iv bought from B&H, was super excited, until I started going through the focus points.
  • First few shots were ok, then left side, bottom four cross type points are producing mushy focus, the right side seemed ok for a while, and then absolutely nothing was coming out in focus and I had to put a global +15 adjustment on the camera to get it anywhere near correct. We have two 6d's, I've had three more 6d's and a 5d mark iii, all our lenses are calibrated and spot on with the rest of our stuff. Even the 6d was able to nail perfect focus with the same lenses, with all points. Note: I tested this many times over and the result was the same. Later, nothing inside my house was coming out in focus until I threw on a +15 global AFMA.
  • I was hoping this was an isolated case but one other person has said they noticed this as well, also bought theirs from B&H in the first shipment. I'm in no way blaming B&H, they're a great company, only mentioning it because if you got yours from there, CHECK your left focus points (the bottom four cross type points on the left). I took a few shots and the results kept coming out the same. Will be exchanging this one -_-.
I'm attaching screenshots of crops w/ focus points.
Everything else about the camera is awesome, the colors, adjustability, and they REALLY improved the dynamic range. Tested against my D750 bodies, it does very well in that regard, and I feel as though ultra high ISO's (12800-25,600) are actually slightly cleaner, with better color than the D750, but that's to be expected from a camera that's two years newer and $1500 more expensive :]

100% crop, right side cross type focus point = good

Left side, cross type focus point- clearly something wrong. The bottom four do this, the top four do not, and the far left, single orientation points seem OK, though I didn't do too much testing before boxing it back up.

1- what lens are you using?

2- where is the EXIF info?

3- have you tried to focus and shoot with LV on on a tripod?

your posted photos just look terrible.... and if focusing doesn't improve (after using different lenses), time to ship it back to canon shop or exchange it for a better one ;-)

No exif necessary. The crops above were with a sigma 35mm 1.4 art. One shot AF, single point focus. I do agree that I should probably post some sort of better photos to avoid people coming in and thinking I don't know how to use a camera, lol. Shutter speeds around 1/2000. This issue was painfully obvious just shooting around the house. Grabbed a 6d, no problems. Grabbed a D750, no problems.
I did test with multiple lenses, sadly it happens with all everything. To anyone else seeing this post, my intent is not to say bad things about this camera. I absolutely love the camera and it's a major improvement to the 5d mark iii. But definitely check for this issue, because I think it's possible others may have gone out like this. Not sure if I should exchange it to B&H (since someone else told me they're seeing similar with theirs they got from there), or to just send it to canon.

"No exif necessary"

....

"The crops above were with a sigma 35mm 1.4 art"

Well that escalated quickly.

I've mentioned everything in the original post. Yes, the crops I posted are with a sigma 35 art (the photos are even labeled saying this), which works perfectly on the two 6D bodies we have here. I understand it could have been a firmware issue with Sigma with the 5d iv being new, but I also mentioned already that I've tried our Canon lenses on it as well and the result is the same. I'm not trying to be rude, but if anybody has bothered to read the whole post they wouldn't ask questions I already answered.

Let me just put this to rest since everybody is focusing on sigma when I said that the Canon lenses are doing it as well...
Here you go, exif and all, on a tripod, Canon 50mm 1.4. Unfortunately all I have Canon wise is my girlfriend's kit. It's less noticeable at F2.8, the 100L is better. At 1.4 it rears its head.

Again, I'm not bashing the camera, not trying to start arguments, I'm just saying check your cameras. I hope the next one will be better.

At 1.4 the Canon lens is mush in the corners...focused or not...

The right side looks just fine. If you focus and recompose, the left side does too. The results are identical at f2.0. I also mentioned the 100L, yet everybody is ignoring that.
I'm not sure why I bothered trying to help 5d iv owners check to see if they might have a problem that they might have not yet noticed, if I'm just going to get bombarded with excuses.

I don't have mounts of high end glass available for Canon right now because I am currently a Nikon shooter, was hoping to switch back to Canon.

Bottom left cross type is definitely front focusing.

If it is doing this consistently then I would agree there is a problem :(

We get a lot of camera X is faulty and so many times it is user error. It is not an accusation against you when clarity is requested. So no offence intended... Canon shooters are always sceptical of the potential Sony Nikon shooter coming to disparage our new baby...😂 Of course now we have 100's of new 5DMK4 owners going to check if they have a dud...oh the joy. I shot a job yesterday with it after a few quick checks... the camera is a dream to work with the only real bore is having to convert the raws in DPP.... common Adobe get it 😡

Just did a test using the Canon 50mm f/1.8 II. Tack sharp focus on mine at the AF points you mentioned.

Maybe .....but lots of autumn colour to shoot ... Why wait till the depths of winter unless of course you are on the other side of the world.

I do wonder just how small the number of problems will be with regard to quality control....certainly some will wait until they have the confidence to get one.....

Seems more likely to be a lens issue. Try it with another lens. Be very meticulous so that you remove all other variables that can mess with your shot.

Walter,

My current camera takes great winter photos so really it's not urgent to upgrade ASAP.
