Interesting Article on the G7X Mark II

I found this interesting because it appears like alot of things we've disliked about the EOS-M are coming to a DiGiC near you.

I'm on the theory that the M line is going to mimic the powershot Gx lineup as much as possible and if so, this may spell for an interesting camera coming up this year.

what I found curious was a few things.

Improved subject tracking
parallel processing of liveview and raw recording / saving reducing blackout.
increased data performance (14x faster than DiGiC 6)

I misunderstood your first sentence. I thought you meant that all of the things we hate about the M3 were going to propagate to other cameras in the lineup

After reading the article, DIGIC 7 does sound very interesting.

What I find curios is that we haven't yet seen any other cameras with DIGIC 7. After the release of the G7X II, we are still getting cameras with DIGIC 4+ and DIGIC 6. Given the long lifecycle of the 80D, I am especially surprised that camera is still using the 3 year old DIGIC 6 instead of this supposedly significantly better DIGIC 7.

well that could very well happen .. lol

actually I took a quick look back at that. it appears as if powershots had the "new digic" around 8 months++ before DSLR's did in the past. new digics (not including the + variants) most always appears on powershots first.

my thought on this is that the development cycle of the powershots is quicker than that of the DSLR's so they are able to use the newer DiGiC's sooner.

The firmware is dedicated to the sensor. The 80D uses a 20 mp sensor that's been around for a while, and the 1" in the G7ii is probably a successive iteration of that sensor, hence the DIGIC 7.

Nope, the 80D uses a brand new 24MP sensor. It has been around less that 6 months and has not been used in any other camera. The 70D also had a unique sensor not used anywhere else.

It's not the camera...

not true at all really.

firmware is subject to the camera body - which is why the M3 is such a bastardized lovechild of Powershi .. and DSLR firmware.

I suspect the firmware developers start to get their marching orders when the camera specifications are nailed down.

In addition to M (original Tenso group) and now the M2, I have worked with the G7X and now the G7X II. IMHO, Digic 7 transformed Mark II into a really responsive camera that is a pleasure to use and produces excellent IQ. For me, a major subjective difference from the G7X in terms of usable performance. So much so, that my criterion for considering new M cameras is now: "Does it have Digic 7?" I'll wait until one does.

This article, which has been around for some time, convinced me to give the Mark II a try. Very glad I did.
