50mm F2 R vs M

Hello Chris,

I have several of the lenses being discussed here.

My R 50/1/4 ROM 60mm Summilux is the latest version of this lens. It is one of my favorite lenses. I have had it on a latex mount for a D800 and it was so nice. It has been on my Canon 5DII (sold) and the it was an excellent match for the canon sensor and look. On my Sony A7r(sold) it was very sharp and the characteristics of the lens shined. This would be an excellent choice and the R-50/1.4 Summilux will always be a sought after lens.

My M 50/1.4 Summilux is often on my M and is of course RF coupled so it is the choice on the M. It is very similar in rendition to the R version, but they are different. I'm not sure I could say which I like best because they render so similarly. sharpness and contrast and color are excellent on both. The M 50 Summilux is actually an APO design although, it never was tagged with that designation. Great choice.

My APO 50 Summicron (sold) was absolutely the best of the bunch. Nothing has been made in this format that touches the optical qualities of the APO 50. It just had a wonderful OOF fall-off and the tonal and color qualities of this lens is amazing. But, it isn't f/1.4 and both of the 50 Summilux lenses are so close optically as to make it almost a draw.

Reading your comments, I'd go for the M 50 Summilux, current ver. It is small and compact and I believe you would have a lot of fun shooting at f/1.4 and, stopped down as well, on your Sony.

Good luck

Never ending story, I have the M 240 and the SL and judging by colors , clarity and budget, for the SL take the R 50/1.4, it will remind you of Eastman Kodak professional film.

Just an example:

Hello Dr,

Your link is to a very nice copy of the version I of this lens. It exhibits a warmer rendering and and less contrast than the new version II. Some folks enjoy this look.

The newer version is of medium to high contrast and flares less... a more modern Leica look. It is also a little bigger as it is an E60 filter size rather than E55.
