I've always been a fan of the 18-55 kit zooms from Nikon and feel they are under rated given the performance, Everyone always thinks they need to immediately upgrade...but this is the most versatile lens for the money that is out there.

Having used every version for the 18-55 kit lens from Nikon I can easily say this one is the best. The P version has stepping motors which make it better for video. There is no noise when zooming, I don't do much video but the the still image quality is better than the previous versions...which were still good. I just shot about 100 images today (street, portrait, some macro) and the edge sharpness is pretty good. All zooms have some shortcomings but for $80 it's hard to justify not having it for when you want to just travel light. One drawback is the lens zoom does stick out physically further than the non-P versions.

Agree with you about the quality of the 18-55 kit zooms.

I would say that I prefer the collapsible 18-55 G VRII though due to the smaller size, but that's only because I do street, if for general use I imagine the newer version would be better probably.

For some reason, Nikon is not selling those two new 18-55P lenses in the U.S. Maybe they think that the dealers (or customers) are too stupid to realize that they'll work on the D3300, D5300 and D5500 only. Or maybe the margin is so small, no one wants to bother. Or maybe they can't make enough of them. I don't know. All I know is that they're not listed on the Nikon USA website and none of the dealers have them, not even B&H, which does a lot of imports.

I have a few zoom lenses and none makes any significant noise while zooming. Focusing is of course a totally different story, but zooming? No.
