### July 2016 Garden&Flower Thread ###

Interesting tropical flower that won't grow in my region. We could use something like those flowers to attract butterflies that have mostly left as we in the States use more chemicals to make the the grass grow... Use to shoot Monarchs all summer but now rarely see them... Hummingbirds mostly only when they're migrating...

Nice .. our Peonies bloomed and are long gone. I think they stayed about two weeks and then the heat got them this spring. …

A member of the Ranunculaceae or Buttercup family … and related to mine and Andrews Clematis … I believe … Very nice picture ...

Interesting … Always like back lighting . .. Our local graveyard is best when the maple turn in fall, not much for flowers. Also some of the residence (including and especially Tallulah) visit one day each fall and tell their stories, which is interesting ….

Nice to see that flowers are still blooming down there and make beautiful pictures ….. 12-23C !!!! … just a pleasant spring day that I'd like to have now, as we're about to get one and more weeks of 100F days and probably 80F nights.. with accompanying humidity … I would .rather be back in Colorado or down there with you . ...

Dr. Leonhart Fuchs, sixteenth century botanist and physician. The fuchsia was named in his honor, over one hundred years after he died. I didn't know that until you asked and I looked it up. I thought he had classified it, but it was discovered in The Greater Antilles much later. I still think he would be surprised, damn it. OK it is a lily, what the Hell do I know. It is upside down, that fooled me. I just make pix, don't know anything about flowers, except juniper berries. Part of the color in that lily is from the flash. If you're nervous about fancy electronic flashes, get some magnesium powder and potassium chlorate and an aluminum tray from a TV dinner. Put the camera on your tripod, oh, I forgot, Oh Gawd, anti-tripod, too. Or, you may still be able to get your hands on a Victor Flash Lamp. Very simple (except for the skin grafts after use) and I believe it will synch with your shutter at any speed, if you ignite it at the proper instant, plus you get a bang!

I made nearly one hundred pix at the local dahlia garden, this morning. I really had some good luck with them. I'm working on a post. Rich

Thanks, WhyNot. I made a dozen pix of a strongly backlit green glad, this morning. I used flash to illuminate the center of the flowers, with strong sunlight coming through the peripheral petals. I'm working on PP it. Unfortunately, there is an ugly parking lot behind it. I'm working on a background which will not interfere with the gauzy, backlit peripheral petals. I'll figure out something, eventually. Say hi to Tallulah for me. I would have liked to have met her, when I was young and strong. Rich

Well, WhyNot, I guess nobody is around to comment on your post. I like the peachy colored rose. How do you know that it is old? I don't think I've seen a meadow salsify before, very nice. Pretty columbine, but I believe that they are about to change the state flower in Colorado. You got pretty far afield. Beautiful there where The Rockies end in New Mexico, but not in Summer, for me. Fortunately for my wrist, the thread was slow in your absence. I like to answer everyone who posts, as you do. I couldn't handle a regular, weekly gig at this point. Rich

The blue is indeed a bit over the top but I liked the colour so I readily confess that it was more of a purple/blue!

I have to admit I spent an inordinate amount of time around schoo,l but I am making up for that now whenever I read about these flowers and plants that I spend time with these days, ,,,, During my travels I spent most of one day with a flower expert explaining flowers and those flowers that grow in CO.. My hearing isn't what it use to be, so don't expect much of that to be passed on until my wife tells me what was actually said ... with luck maybe that expert will join us here and keep us honest ...

It's not as though I never used flash or a tripod, I used a flash gun with a Speed Graphic for some indoor sports and events but never liked the results, nor did I like carrying a half dozen of those bulbs in my pockets along with three or four film plates (I have to admit that I never tried Magnesium.) .... In 35mm film days I almost always used a tripod and Panatomic_X film, also used one with the Bronica and Verichrome... but then my wife rebelled and refused to carry it any more ....

Thanks for the comment ... I have no problem with the color .. I rarely spend any time trying to match reality with my interpretations... This thread is all about your vision and interpretation. . ....

I need to make a correction. Tallulah was born and raised here but doesn't reside here. She does come back to visit friends and relatives on that one October day. ... I think she spends most of her time these days on the east coast ...

Well things seem to have slowed a bit here.. Maybe we need a host with more charisma .. too bad you're unavailable for the long term .. I tried recruiting a few new members during my travels and hopefully they'll stop by and share a few pictures to find out what this thread is all about. ... We might do better in the Picture Forums but they all seem too broad, or like B&W too narrow, and they too don't seem very well attended... and most need someone to step up and assume some ownership ....

a bit wrinkled on the edges like me ....

Not sure about that as I got clear out of CO before remembering that other possibility, which I never saw while I was there. ....

Yeah, WhyNot, she's buried next to her sister in Maryland, but that's not important. Mark Twain insisted that the storyteller must never let the truth get in the way of a good story, and he was right. You must go as far as the sobriety of your audience will allow you, then add an extra spoonful for the pot. Rich

I don't laugh out loud very easily anymore, WhyNot. You just painted me a mental pic. I instantly and automatically embellished it, and had a great laugh. You see, that is why I have the yak. A handful of grain is all it takes to gain her cooperation. I am deaf in my right ear, except for the whistle. It is, I am certain, from driving so much while married for twenty two years. I believe that if I had lived in Britain, it would be the left ear. The doctor says it is Meniere's Disease, but he was not married to my wife.

I haven't imagined that you lack the skill or experience to use flash and tripod. I figure that it is your desire to simplify. I'm just the opposite. When Jeff (CalNature) was here recently to look at properties, I rolled two large camera bags out to his SUV on a hand truck. His expression said, " Holy ****!" When I was a youngster, how I used to love to pop out a hot flashbulb and toss it to someone and tell them not to drop it as it would shatter and leave broken glass on the floor. It was amazing to see how few realized upon catching it that there was not enough hot mass there to actually burn them.

Back to the dahlias. Almost done; Rich
