Although I'm interested in a wide variety of subject matter, first and foremost I consider myself a street shooter. Indeed most of what interests me are candid street portraits, although now and then I enjoy chatting up my subjects and then asking if I can photograph them.
Anyway, this week I shot the dress rehearsal of the local ballet troupe, and I approached the assignment as though it were street work where, to me, the environment my subjects inhabit is important as the subjects themselves. So for example I intentionally cropped wide to include overhead stage lights, curtain pulls in the wings and scratches/wear marks in the floor. And as when I’m in shooting in the street, I chatted up the dancers during time outs for tech and light setting, and confirmed what I already knew: at the tender ages of 20-23, they’re already suffering bone and joint issues that will follow them and progressively get worse as they age. But when the curtain goes up and the lights shine bright, adrenaline kicks in and for a short time they experience sheer exhilaration from flying and moving as mere mortals can scarcely imagine.
Lighting was atrocious and I don't use flash, so there's lots of noise beyond what I could deal with in post without turning the subjects waxen. Normally I process black/white, but the artistic director/choreographer requested color.
Anyway, here are a few.
