I have a 2 month old Sony 128gb sdxc card that failed in the middle of taking a picture today. My computer does not recognize the card either. Over in Switzerland shooting my second day. Afraid I may have lost some very nice images. Any suggestions ? Using an A7. Was eventually able to get the camera to use one of my other cards.

Ouch - that's a high-capacity card! I personally use a number of 16gb cards just in case one fails which makes it somewhat less potentially catastrophic; I had one of those fail the other day (whilst reviewing images on my Mac) which was painful enough, but a 128gb card could contain a serious number of photos :-(

Unfortunately, I don't think there's much you can do if the card isn't recognised by your camera or computer but I'll watch this thread with interest just in case there is some hope...

Well, the only good news is that I only had a couple 100 images on it from today's shoot. Unfortunately it was a gorgeous day up in the Alps near Meiringen.

Damn shame.

In my experience, it is very rare for an SD card to fail - only experienced it once so far - but the potential is always there. The only way to be sure to minimise the loss of treasured shots is to backup your photos on a regular basis; I wish I'd done that but I'm just about to upgrade my computer and my external drive is almost full as well...

There are a number of SD Card recovery tools available, just Google SD Card recovery.

This is one that I have used. If it doesn't work for you there are many others.

Sorry to hear about your problem!

Try it with another computer or with a different OS - Maybe it sees/reads the card - If it works do a backup (or clone it) immediately before trying to recover anything from that (apparently) faulty/damaged card; also don't allow aything to be writen to it!

Hope you can recover your photos and wish you luck. ;)

All the best,
Pedro

Thanks for the suggestions.

That seems like a common problem with Sony 128gb 4k sd cards. That happened to me one month ago in the middle of my Venice trip. I sent it directly to Sony service when I came back home. They managed to recover the photos and sent me a new card which I will never ever use again :)

I also use 16GB cards, for precisely this reason, with my A7 and a7II. I get ~450 raw + jpeg images/card.

My old suggestion is the same as anyone else's - put the card away till you get home and try various recovery software. Next would be to turn the job over to pros.

Just to put this in perspective, we've used cards from a number of vendors here, including Sony, and over quite a few years, the Sony cards have been the most reliable brand (in fact the only brand we've yet to experience a failure on).

Clearly you were unlucky. Good that Sony were able to recover the contents for you, and it's a pity if the experience has led you to conclude that other manufacturer's cards will be a better bet. Based on our experience to date, I doubt that will prove to be the case.

I had the same thing happen with my Sony Card. I tried everything to recover the images but neither the camera or two other PCs would even recognize that I inserted a card. Sony replaced the card but I'll never trust it with anything important.
