Hi All!

I'm soon to start my commercial Flight Training and looking for new lens for my Nikon D700 FX Camera. I'm after Wide Angle as most pictures will be taken inside an aircraft. 3 pictures visible above have been taken by my friend during his training. I'm after similar zoom and angle or anything equivalent to get best picture in such environment.

Due to the cost of my Flight Training I'm currently limited to around £500, that's why I'm not looking at the Nikkor lens but comparing the Sigma, Tokina and Tamron. So far I have narrowed down the the four below, I hope someone can help me chose:

Tamron AF 10-24mm F/3.5-4.5 Di II LD Aspherical [IF]

Tokina AF AT-X17-35mm F4 PRO FX

Tokina AF 16-28mm F2.8 PRO FX

Sigma 12-24mm F/4.5-5.6 DG HSM II

Thank You!

Hi,

I've been quite happy with Tokina 16-28 on my D800. Many of the images in my Moab Winter 2015 gallery on my website were taken with it. It's a rather large lens and the bulbous front element does not allow filters - which can have some probs on wide angle lenses anyway (polarizer). Just need to be mindful that the front element is 'out there'. Recommended.

Check your friend's EXIF data to determine which focal length(s) is (are) used the most for such scenarios. Also, be careful about DX lenses as they will not function properly on your D700. I believe the Tamron 10-24 is a DX lens.

Although I'm rather biased toward the constant 2.8 of the Tokina 16-28, I tend to value the Sigma higher for its 12mm at the widest -- in a confined space such as an aircraft cockpit, the 10-20 range should be more appropriate. However, depending on your friend's most frequently used focal lengths, you might go with the Tokina 16-28.

Please note that I haven't personally used any of the lenses above for my D810, nor have I taken pictures inside a house, let alone an aircraft. ;)

The Tamron AF 10-24mm is a DX lens, so you can rule that one out. Have you considered the Tamron SP 15-30MM F/2.8 Di VC USD? I don't personally own it, but I am strongly considering that lens. It's big and bulky, but the IQ is excellent.

I think the Sigma is your best bet out of the lenses your suggested. No matter what lens you chose, please don't HDR the heck out of the images like the samples you posted from your friend. They could be really fantastic if it weren't for that.

I've been using a Tamron 15-30 with my D810. However, the OP indicated the budget:

(By the way, you should have replied directly to the original post and not to mine -- unless you wanted to tell me something.)

I understand about the economics, but the availability of used 14-24 is a great option (I bought mine Used). its hands down my best lens... I find that settling for second best is just that. I bet you can get some beautiful images from up there...but keep your eyes ahead and your hands on the "wheels"......LOL

How about the sharp and very affordable Samyang 14mm f/2.8 IF ED UMC? Less than $500, super-wide. It's manual focus, but you really don't need AF for super-wide/fisheye lenses. I'd like to get one myself one of these days.

Check out some photos with that lens here: https://www.flickr.com/groups/14/pool/

Since you've got the Sigma 12-24mm on your list, curious why not the Tokina 12-24mm f4? Very highly regarded especially before the higher megapixel bodies, constant f4, sharp wide open. It would be great on a D700, I still have mine.

Thank you all for your replies! I just ordered Sigma 12-24mm. Will try it out and post some pictures with the results. Once again thank you!
