Nikon D500 XQD corrupted images

Anyone have a problem like this? If so, what type of XQD card were you using? Were you saving images to an SD card at the same time? Were you shooting in CH frame rate?

I was shooting Continuous High frame rate, saving Raw on the Lexar 32GB 2933X XQD card and fine JPG on a Lexar Professional 64GB 600X card. No card error while shooting, but when I put the XQD card in the card reader to import images it wasn't showing up as a D500 card and Adobe Photo Downloader couldn't find images to download. I used the Lexar Recovery Software to recover most of the files. The SD card images were fine and the images on the SD card downloaded without a problem.

Lexar Support recommends I have the XQD card replaced, but no word on what specific problem caused the image corruption. Is the problem caused by the camera or the card?

Any idea what causes this? I always reformat a card in-camera before each use and do not delete files on a card except by reformatting. I also leave a camera "on" the entire time I am using it. I reformatted the card and will try using it again, probably without an SD card in the camera at the same time. I rented a D500 before purchasing one, and didn't have this issue with the XQD card during my short rental.

I'm disappointed to have this file problem; the D500 has amazing AF, blazingly fast frame rate, and usable image quality at surprisingly high ISOs. Taking time to use recovery software isn't something I want in my regular workflow!

I am using the 64G Lexar 2933 XQD. No problem so far.

Using the exact same card (Lexar 32GB 2933X XQD) and no issues thus far but my particular sample has tested way below specs:

CrystalDisk test results after low level format

Thought it was a fluke so also tested on FlashBench but got similar results:

I dunno if it's limited to my card but perhaps might be worth testing yours as well. I'm going to be requesting a replacement.

The card reader? What brand? Also which Operating System? I am assuming which USB port USB 2 or USB3 on the computer.

Since I do not have a Card Reader for XQD I used a USB cable to a USB 3 port. I am using MacOS X so the camera did not show up as an External Disc so I had to use Image Capture.app to import. Not sure if Windows has an app like that?

What I would do try to take some images similar to what you were doing and use the USB cable from Camera to computer to see if it replicates. Also see if there is firmware update on the card reader my Transcend TS-RDF8K did have an update (although it does not read that card) but you never know.

I took a bunch of cyclist using the D500 and the same Lexar 32GB card had no trouble importing from the camera.

This way you can try to isolate the cause.

Definitely a card error, I have had that happen on a SD card and also a CF card in other bodies... the CF card went completely bad a few days after it started, THE SD Card only hapened once but never again after a reformat

Lou, have you updated your Mac OS? It now recognizes the D500.

Yes to Camera Raw 6.19.

One odd thing I get I have LR6, Adobe Bridge CC and PSCS5; I used to be able to open my D7K NEF's in Bridge CC with the 9.x Camera RAW (probably because I have LR6) and go to PSCS5 with no problem. Something changed I cannot do that now. While in Camera Raw Adobe 9.x I can save (left hand button) as PSD and then open in PSCS5. I am going to copy this and pose a thread on the Mac forum.

Hello everyone.

Thom Hogan reports similar failures. The key is the LEXAR SD card, alone or with XQD. Shooting XQD only eradicates the problem ay its root

All the best from northern Italy, Dino.
I'm on the NIK side of photography.

I have the same problem processing images from my Nikon D500 using the Lexar XQD card. They were fine in the camera, but once in Lightroom they would suddenly develop the same type of color band through the lower third of the picture. It wasn't every picture and didn't appear immediately. I blamed Lightroom at first and spent hours on line with Adobe help people. Using the SD card did not cause the problem. This has happened in the past month. Will Lexar still replace the card even though they no longer sell them?

I doubt it. The Lexar brand is now owned by a Chinese based company.

I've only had 2 card failures in 19 years ... both we're Lexar.

I recommend Sony XQD's. They are quite expensive these days. If you don't feel you need 2 cards in your camera, and/or you don't normally shoot more than 4 second high speed bursts, you could easily do with a medium speed SD by Sandisk ...
