Ciao!

I am a happy user of a Sony RX1, with its wonderful full frame sensor and its bright f2 Zeiss 35mm lense.

Every once in a while, I miss a longer reach, that I used to have with a full dSLR kit with multiple fixed and zoom lenses that I had, but that I sold before the RX1, since I only do photography during travels and it became a burden more than an enjoyable experience.

I was looking for a small RX1 companion, with a medium to long tele, keeping in mind:
  • No interest in video: for 4K shooting I have GoPro and iPhone 6S
  • I love subject isolation & bokeh & shallow DOF
  • Preferably microUSB charged
  • I usually shoot RAW-only, so IQ has to be good and a very good step up from iPhone
I found some options like a good deal on a Oly Stylus 1, the Panasonic Lx100, or the Canon G7X II, but would appreciate any suggestions from you experts.

Thanks a lot!!

Enrico

Perhaps a small mirrorless with an APS-C sensor is a better choice, for subject isolation and shallow DOF. Like the Sony A6300 or A6000. Or the A5100, if you don't need an EVF.

I ran the RX100III for a while but the 24-70 wasn't enough for me, so i went for the FZ1000 F2.8 straight through 25-400mm lens, but as you want pocketable then id say TZ/ZS100 as its the first 1inch sensor compact with a 200mm zoom. great photos does 4K and 4K photomode, post focus mode

I sold the FZ1000 for funds to get the A7Rii but I've just bought the TZ100 as i missed my FZ1000 but wanted something for my pocket and it fits in there just fine..

nice unit

It would be a good choice indeed, but I'm reading that TZ100 has a somewhat slower lense (that would sacrifice subject isolation) versus the Canon G7X:

Would an A5100 with kit lense offer much shallower DOF, compared to the other 1" sensor alternatives like the G7X?

Yes it does have a slower lens however i have not noticed it. your also only getting 100mm on the G7x as opposed to 250mm on the TZ100, if your ok with 100mm id go RX100MK4 and stick with 24/70. its all about your needs really what is it your after, fast lens or Reach ? Reach its the TZ, fast lens Sony or Canon, id stick with Sony...

I did read about the canons also but not a fan, too dated technology for me to spend cash on, but if its speed of lens is all your looking for then canon may be your route

Yes, larger sensors are better suited for that.
