Hi,

I am new to photography. I did not want to buy a new camera just because I am a newbie. After a bit research, I decided to buy a used 40D from eBay. Today I received my camera, it was physically in perfect condition. It also takes good photos under normal conditions.

What I wanted to do was to take long exposure photos during the night, usually photos of planets and galaxies etc. I put the cap of my camera and I tested the sensor with 1, 10 and 20 seconds. The result was very disappointing. I did two trials with noise reduction enabled and disabled. I am not sure if this is normal. if the camera is defective, I don't want to keep it. Can someone help me please?

These are the results:
