Hello beautiful people!!

i recently bought new a nikon d7200 and lately on my photos there is a round lighter color mark, sharp edges.

it shows up in every photo at the same spot, and the dimension varies with the aperture. NO MATTER WHAT LENSE I PUT it always shows up.

at first inspection the sensor seems clean.

has anyone ever had the same issue as i have? has anyone got any idea on what it could be?

i am exluding dust on the sensor and dust on lenses.

straight out of camera [iso100 - F2.2 - 22mm - 1/3200]

attached a photo example. is in the middle of the frame a little bit on the right, easy to spot!

thanks!

I had this issue few weeks ago it start after I had a shot for the sun disk without taking the proper precaution and thought its a dust or orbit artifact but neither blowing nor cleaning the sensor made it up, I send it to the service and I have been told its element burn ( The shutter is melted and has a hole which light go through ( their analysis were from a laser or sun pictured ) I told them that I was shooting the sun disk therefore I had to change the shutter and pay for it

thanks

Since it varies with aperture and shows up with every lens...it has to be something related to the sensor or the filter stack over the sensor. I'm guessing a stain on the filter or defect in the adhesive. Have you ever wet cleaned the sensor? I would suggest doing that now and see if that fixes it (a stain issue). If it does not, then an issue with the adhesive under the filter and a fix only Nikon service can do. Good Luck

Yes, it does not look like a normal dust bunny to my eye. It could be something like dried residue from compressed air propellant (or saliva?!) and true, wet cleaning with Eclipse and a swab would deal with that.

However, as you suggest, a more serious sensor issue may be the cause and if so only Nikon can deal with this. As the camera is new it is probably still under warranty. An attempted sensor wet clean, especially in inexperienced hands, might invalidate the warranty?

Yes, I would agree that this must be on the sensor/filter stack. I would send it back under warranty. If it just turns out to be oil or some other contaminant on the sensor, then the worst case will be you'll have to pay for a sensor clean. If its some kind of fault with the sensor, they should repair it under warranty.

If you're shooting with a filter attached...be sure to try removing the filter and see if it goes away before cleaning the sensor or sending it back to Nikon. Also would keep the lens hood attached. Not sure if this problem is on every shot or under certain circumstances. Hope this helps.

Does this occur with any lens used or just one in particular?

You said the dimension changes with the aperture. By dimension, do you mean the size or the shape? If size, does the size vary a little or a lot?

if the problem is a stain on the sensor I do not see why the size would change much, if at all.

This is a longshot. With the lens off and the mirror locked up in sensor cleaning position, inspect the inside of the mirror box for anything light colored that could reflect light, including the back of the mirror.

The OP stated that it occurs with all lenses.

thanks!

but the d7200 has no lowpass filter, if thats the filter you mean..

i think this is the best answer and possibility, have you got a mark on the rear element coating of the lense you`ve been using?

thanks

DAMN!

i just checked the shutter using Mup mode and indeed is the shutter melt!

so you say isn`t cover by warranty?

thanks!

It still has a filter stack though over the sensor...just no AA filter in the mix. I was speaking about a stain or adhesive problem on the filter stack (the thing you are cleaning when cleaning the sensor).

That said...I'm thinking a problem with the shutter (melt spot) might be an issue.

In my case it was my mistake or this how I have been told as I did point the camera to the sun disk without precaution therefore it was not covered by the seller warranty, have you expose laser or direct sun to the shutter through the lens by any mean?

As for the lens it was not effected thank God

thats good to know :-) i had a good look and the sensor seems completely fine. is a melted spot on the shutter unfortunately!

Yes, I think this is the best answer as well.

I have heard of this possibility but never seen the image evidence until now. So, though you have had this most unfortunate experience, it has been educational - and a warning to others.

Good luck in getting it all fixed. I hope it is not too expensive!

For what it's worth, found the following in an article regarding how to photograph the sun.

"Before we go any further let us be clear about one thing. Photographing the sun is not a job for the uninformed as it could be quite a dangerous endeavor. If you look at the sun long enough without proper filtration you could easily damage your cameras sensor and also lose eye sight. The first and foremost consideration while attempting to photograph the sun, should be safety; both of your eye and equipment. Never look at the sun with your bare eyes or through any other equipment without proper filters attached. The only time we get to look at the sun is when it’s only a few degrees above the horizon (during sunrise and sunset); at all other times if you are not careful you could permanently damage your eyes just by looking at the sun."

Thanks for the posting but this what I have learnt the hard way :-)

After I knew that the shutter was burned by the sun I did search and found this artical and read it but as mentioned after I had damaged the shutter, what is really imortant is as one of the posters said its an educational experience and warning for others as well

Thanks once more
