Hello

I'm planning to buy some Sony gear - normally I would by at Amazon - however I came across 42nd Street Photo - they seem to have very competitive prices - are they any good - anybody buying there and what's your experience?

Thanks for your input.

I suggest you do a site search for 42nd Street Photo using the search box up at the top.

There seem to be some strong feelings one way or another.

While I've never been there, or on that continent for that matter, I've seen enough complaints here that I wouldn't even consider them.

When it comes to NYC Especially, the only stores I would trust would be B&H and Adarama. Anything else is "bait and switch". These other stores are famous for saying, "oh sorry, that low price isn't in effect any more". Or your new camera isn't exactly "new". Then when you call to exchange it, you can never get a person on the phone. Even with B&H I've never been able to get a person on the phone. The line's always busy. Usually when it comes to prices for new equipment, the prices should be
pretty close . If a price is too good to be true, there's a reason for it. I deal with local stores unless there's something I can't get at a competitive price. Like memory cards. Then I place an order with B&H!

... 1-star reviews from disgusted customers with detailed tales of being ripped off, mixed with one-line 5-star reviews from employees and their best friends.

Basically half of the reviews are like this:

1*. Do yourself a favor and don't take a trip down scumbag lane. 42nd Photo is a despicable operation. If you're still considering buying anything from 42nd, I would advise you to smash your head into a wall 42 times instead. It will be quicker and less painful than dealing with these clowns.

- and the other half are like this:

5*. Canon 85mm L series f1.2 lens: Mike has great customer service skills and an asset to his company. Great customer service.

Hmmm. Well done, Mike's Mom...

Best wishes

42nd St. Photo sold me a "New" somewhat soiled and greasy camera with 297 images on the counter, no warranty documentation, pieces of the kit missing, menu settings from a different time zone, and dust on the sensor that showed up in blank skies at f/8, and beyond. When I phoned them about it, they said they'd mail me a free three year warranty, if I promised to give them a positive review! I'd stay away from 42nd St. Photo.
