from what i known, s602z has a smaller ccd sensor. less area of sensor means less effect pix could be produced. and the image quality would be less. 717 has a 2/3 ccd sensor. which is much more bigger than 602.
so could 602 be better than 717 in any ways? other than the size of the sensor?
thanks...

Well Jeff you might get better results at high ISO with the Fuji. ISO400 is pretty noisy on the 717.

The movie mode on the 602 is cerainly much better and it has more functions you can control: just.

The card may be an issue, as a lot of people don't like Memory sticks, but the new Pro stick looks like they'll work with the 717 (although you'll have to wait and see on that one)
I can't see any other advantages myself.

As to the G3 I am personally very disappointed with the results I've seen. The G3 galleries put up in the Canon forum have contained a lot of very disappointing images and the lens seem to be soft IMO. I have been very interested in the G3 and I've been amazed to see so many soft images, so many colour issues and so much CA all over the place. It really looks a step back from the G2 in image quality to me.

But the 717 looks good and seems to not only have more resolution but a greater dynamic range than the other cameras at the moment.
But is is worth $300+ more than a 602?
Just my two euro cents.

Ian

thanks for the advice..
if i get enough i'll go 4 717
but the money is a issue to me.
mayb i'll get a g3 + 1g ibm microdrive
cuz i think it would be cheaper.

Cheaper? I don't think so, if you are not satisfied about your camera after 3 months, the only thing you could do is to sell it second-hand and go for the right one, and it of course costs you more than to make the right choice at the very start.

I can garantee that 717 is a superb camera, but what stops me to go for it is the body, IMO there's absolutely no reason to have a prosumer level camera painted anything other than black. Memory stick could be an issue, I hate the memory stick too, but if you have that extra money, or seek for second hand MS...

just my two uk pence, lol.

G3 is not that good as 717? and G3 is not as good expceted as G2 used to be? then why G3 is still the top camera on the top cameras list?
but i do believe, popular doesn't really mean it is really good.

i personally like 717 very much. the design. cuz i own a 505v, so i would like to have a 717. but ai...... money is a issue.

ok.. stop talking now.

i know 717 is superb. but i like G3 also, but i do like 717 more than G3.

so if i won't get enough money, then i'll face it.. the thing is not that i don't like G3, i like it.. but not as much as i like 717. so
if.. i do get a G3, i won't dislike it after a time...
so...
memory stick could be a issue, but it would be that much.

now the only the i am considering is the money. and i do like 717 body very much. cuz i own a 505v. and the silver color looks good in my opinion.
cuz i like something different. why always in black color? .. :-)
ok. thanks for ur opinion anyway.

Well where are the good G3 galleries? I would really like to see some. I've looked at dozens of shots and a lot of them are just soft or out of focus and a lot of them contain CA.

I could link you to maybe a dozen really awful G3 galleries, more for sure, but I don't want to criticize any photographer and I don't think it's fair to do that.

But I really would like to see some good G3 shots! I think I've seen one good gallery of Hawaii I think.
By contrast, finding good 717 shots is easy:

After a while, pursuing more pixels or a larger zoom range or anything else becomes meaningless unless you have a specific application in mind. An auto that has a top speed of 400 mph is not more desirable to me, but may be to you. The s602 has a broad ISO range, a broad macro range, a very good zoom and f-stop range, all in a very convenient and attractive package. I don't envision making prints beyond, say 16 by 20, and the s602 can produce excellent photos at that size. Maybe extended capability is required for scientific/engineering applications, but for making sharp pleasing photos for viewer pleasure, the 602 fits me well. The 717 looks like it would be awkward to manipulate.

Do you really think this is that big a difference? The Fuji Sensor is 1/1.7 inches which results in a diagonal of 0.59 inches compared to the 0.66 inches the Sony has. This really does mean squat. The Sony sensor has almost twice as many sensor cells on about the same space which results in much noisier pictures requiring more light or more amplification to gain any advantage if at all possible.

Then there is
  • the memory stick (expensive and propriarity) limited to 128Mb compared to the 1Gb of the Microdrive the Fuji uses.
  • the non standard (dead after three years no matter what you do, costing a bundle) battery.
  • the lens that produces more CA than the Fuji's
  • the limited useable aperture range. (highest you'd get is f/8 compared to f/11 for better DOF).
  • limited 1/1000 in shutter speed (yes I needed 1/2500 in some situations already even when the aperture was closed to f/11
  • the unusably slow continuous drive mode (doesn't hold a candle to the 5fps of the Fuji),
  • pathetic video (but that really isn't the reason to choose either tho).
As for the G3 that isn't even worth discussing as the aperture has to double up as shutter which yields all sorts of problems ranging from limited shutter speeds at fully opened aperture to blurredness and lack of control over the DOF.

I think my friend's 717 is ugly as hell, no offense :)

It might look good in some lousy sci-fi movie, but I do not want to hold it around like that. Its functions are good, but don't think its worth of 300 more than S602, I just think its the brand that matters sometime.
Anything but 717!!!

All very good points Karl and I totally agree. I have used both and in the end you will be more please with the results and useability of the Fuji 602..

PS If you are after fast shutter speeds, in manual mode the 602's maximum is 1/10,000 sec, has faster focus time and in full manual virtually no shutter lag....... This camera is the fastest non-SLR on the market...

Have you actually put your hands on the camera? The sony has great features, but very uncomfortable to use. My 8 y/o would love it, because he has very small hands and would be able to use the controls. The storage options are terrible. Did you khow the average price of the 128 mb memory stick in the US is $60, thats $600. for 1gig of memory vs the MD @ $250ish.

When I look at the sony cameras, I think video cameras - can't help it, I just do. The 717 design is very video camera-ish.

MY friend has the 707 and I the 602, There are some areas that the Sony is better. Picture quality is a little better but not enough to pay an extra $300 for. In other threads there are Pro's using the 602 for weddings etc. The 707 as the 717 are slow, If you are considering using it for any kind of sports etc. Or better yet anything that cannot sit still for very long you would be better off with the 602. Also the video is at 30fps and that is a big deal compared to the 707/717. Good luck on what ever you choose both are great cameras. Personally I rather like the SLR feel and looks.

The final 5 frame, 5 fps burst modes and wider aperture and ISO ranges of the 602 do make it a more versatile camera that will work under a greater variety of circumstances. The 717 would almost always capture higher quality images but it may not catch the shots when it counted.

Just as a point of information, Sony just announced at CES that they're introducing a 1GB memory stick called the Memory Stick Pro.

However, it costs US$880.

Unbelievable.
