Out of the box this combo is forced to 1/60th as usual. This is of course asking for trouble hand held with so many pixels....I've read that upping the speed can lead to issues with flash power, dark backgrounds ect.

Anyone had handheld experience with higher than 1/60th or am I expecting too much from this flash ?. What works for you ?

Regards

Hmm.... are you referring to "P" mode? In Manual, Av, and Tv you should be allowed to sync up to the limit, 1/200 IIRC, and further in high speed sync mode.

Flash with slow shutter speed is likely not going to be an issue for the slight blur you're referring to. The flash will illuminate the subject and nearly remove any chance for blurring. Granted, the non subject background will likely blur. Remember, the flash and aperture lights the subject and the speed lights the background, unless the flash is being used as a "fill".

I use the high speed sync on my 5DS and 580II quite often and it works fine.

Agree with Tazz... I just leave my flash in high-speed sync mode all the time... that way, I can just adjust my shutter speed as needed. I also have the 600ex-rts (and some of the Yongnuo knock-offs), and they work just fine in HSS. Does HSS lower flash power? Yes. But a few tweaks (flash exposure compensation, flash power adjustment, etc) and you'll be just fine.

I don't understand that, it should be fine up to 1/200 and need HSS enabled to go higher? I use 580EXIIs but did shoot with 600EXs a few days back and everything was fine at 1/200 at f5.6 (set Manually).

OK, I do not understand the part about "forced to 1/60th as usual." While I have yet to use High Speed Sync with my 5Ds R and 600EX-RT, I have used shutter speeds up to and including 1/200th. I only use flash with the camera set to Manual, at least with Canon*, so perhaps you are using another mode? (When I learned to use SLR cameras, I was taught Manual, Aperture, and Time/Speed modes, only. "P" remains unfamiliar.)

*I will, occasionally, use flash in Aperture mode with Nikons.

Do not be afraid to try the camera set to Manual mode, if your subject is within range of the flash. Set a desired shutter speed, set the desired aperture, for whatever depth of field you want, set an ISO as low as possible for the conditions, and let that powerful 600EX-RT do its job. The flash will choose the amount of light, in E-TTL mode. Use your Flash Exposure Compensation (FEC) to adjust the exposure, to suit your taste. FEC is adjusted by pressing the second button from the right, and then the rear dial is turned to adjust up/down. :-)

Thanks everyone...been a few years since I had to sell my 5dIII and gear. Getting back into it slowly.
