So I recently sold my Sony RX100 M3 for a good deal and bought a G5X because I was so torn between upgrading to the expensive M4 or settle for the G5X or go for a Fujifilm (I wasn't so happy with their models so I took them out as option).

I was going on a trip so I needed a camera. Ended up with Canon. I'm quite happy with the G5X but a few days after I got it, FUJIFILM RELEASED THE X70.

I'm so disappointed because I had an X20 before and I just fell in love with X70's new features. Touchscreen and tilt-screen? Yes! (But hey, the G5X's screen is amazing!)

Bottom line is, should I bother with the X70 or just stick to the G5X? I know they can't be compared but in terms of compact camera, which do you guys think would be better?

Would greatly appreciate the advice!

Well, the larger sensor is tempting, IF you want large prints, large crops, or more creative shallow depth of focus.

I could not give up the G5X's wider (and taller) 24mm start or the optical zoom of the G5X which seems to be a very exciting new camera.

I understand, from another thread in the Sony forum that the G5X not only gives Auto ISO in M but also M*, Manual Shift, similar to P* Program Shift (I think Canon uses different letters for modes)

Sounds like you have a chronic case of GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome). Why don't you wait and see what the reviews say about the X70? Fuji is on a roll and it should be a great camera. The X70 is aimed at street shooters for the most part IMO. What you gain mostly is the larger APS-C sensor and nice Fujifilm color; you lose the EVF and the range of the G5X. There is no free lunch...

Put your G5x at 28mm, memorize the settings, then, put the G5x in C mode and don't touch zoom anymore.

See if you like it that way...

For me the electronic viewfinder as a feature is what has interested me in the G5X the most. When the Fuji hits the street there should be a lively resale market if you decide to sell the G5X.

If you wanted a fixed lens larger sensor camera why did you buy the G5X instead of the Ricoh GR, Coolpix A, X100 or even the M3+22? IMO, there is absolutely no reason to buy the G5X if you only need a 28mm equivalent lens.

Txla... well, as a Fuji user (XE-1, XE-2, XT-1), I really love their design, the great colors they produce, and their fantastic lens choices. However, the X70 compared to the G5X kinda loses me as it does not have a viewfinder.

In preparation for a long international work trip I thought about getting an RX100 M3 as an everyday carry, but found that the short FL and design weren't of my liking. I knew I wanted a finder, so the G5X is the best compact 1" sensor choice for me (I also have a Nikon V1 that I also really enjoy, but it's still too big to fit in my jacket pocket.) I get a longer focal length, a built-in finder, touch screen, and usable controls. The G5X lens has gotten some bad reviews, but I'm ok with it for my everyday use, and I don't need 4K video. I did bring the XT-1 though for the weekends though. So two cameras came along.

I think that the G5X is a great little camera and my expectations are met by it. I think that for me, the G5X is worth keeping since the X70 is missing the finder and the zoom range. Again, it's all up to you and what your priorities are for your style of photography.

If your willing to give up the zoom lens I'm sure the image quality and dynamic range will be much better. Not sure why you didn't check out the Panasonic lx 100 over the g5x. I own an xe2 with the 35 f2 as my walk around and it takes very usable photos. Although it's shortly being replaced by a Leica q. I tried the g5x and found the lens too soft for me and the dynamic range very poor compared to the Sony or the Panasonic both were much better. If you need the zoom I'd go back to a Sony or try the Panasonic if not Fuji makes a great camera and the touch screen focus is a nice option to have. Also Fuji latest autofocus is very usable and I'd say better than Sonys but not quite as quick as Panasonic, definitely much more accurate and quick than the g5x, definite shutter lag and wrong focus acquired. I would purchase the x70 as a pocket camera if it had a 50mm equilant lens on it. Than between the q and x70 I would have my two favorite lenses covered for street photography, too bad no one makes a nice 50mm walk around camera. Since I find taking two smaller cameras is a lot easier to use than two lenses and one camera, no one wants to miss a shot or a dirty sensor. Good luck but I'd wait for the camera to come out and try it before purchasing, your personal ability to use it is more important than reviews.

One of the well-kept secrets about the X70 is its built-in teleconverter software, that allows you to shoot at either 35mm or 50mm. Yes, I know what you're thinking: "Well that's no different from a digital zoom, and will just lead to degraded image quality." Actually, whatever interpolation algorithms Fuji is using, they're so good that after the fact, I can't tell which images I shot at 50mm and which came from the native 28mm.

I might add that I also have a g5x, and have ventured into the Fuji X series because I love the Fuji colors, the film simulations, and the well-designed partial color mode. If I were going on a trip I would take both cameras with me. However, if I could only take one, the g5x zoom, evf, flexibility and reliability would win the day. Just my thoughts...
