Can you recommend a tablet for picture viewing?

I would like to store my best pictures on a tablet for easy showing and viewing. Not planning to edit anything there. Which tablet would you recommend for this purpose based on screen quality and storage capacity?

Thanks

My preference is for Apple products, because I prefer iOS, so iPad Air 2 or iPad Pro. But even the Kindle HDX 8.9 has a very good screen for photo viewing.

Always check the gamut, delta, white point, brightness, and reflectance test results before buying.

That's an excellent site. Soneira's testing is fantastic!

From that site you kinked, it says the surface pro 4 is the best display tested.

So there is my recommendation, surface pro 4.

Runs full windows 10, and you can edit on the fly with the best screen.

Both the Surface Pro 4 and Surface Book are plagued with issues. Microsoft forums are rife with disgruntled users. Chief among them are (1) intermittent freezes/lock-ups (esp. with the Surface book, when the "tablet" is detached from the keyboard) and (2) battery drain.

Further, it's unclear to what extent the problems are hardware-related (and unfixable) or addressable via firmware.

Nevertheless, they are compelling offerings.

Always check the screen quality in an actual store to see if you like it.

I prefer one which allows external storage via micro sd cards. Otherwise pay extra for the larger memory capacity version.

As for the size? That depends on you. I have an 8 inch and 10 inch tablet. Both are useful. The smaller is easier to carry and handle.

Most Tablet sucks: horrible low-resolution 1024x640 or 1280x720 LCD. I recommend skipping these crappy tablets. The best on Android are:
  • Samsung Tab S1 (2560 x 1600) 16:10 ratio
  • Samsung Tab S2 9.7 (1536 x 2048) 4:3 ratio
  • Samsung Tab PRO 8.4 (1600 x 2560)
  • Samsung Tab PRO 10.1 (1600 x 2560)
They don't sell these anymore, but you can find them used at really cheap price
  • 9" Amazon Kindle HDX (2560x1600)
  • 9" Nook HD+ (1920x1200).
I pickup a used Nook HD+ for just a $100 and I'd never been happier. The Contrast, color, is better than many IPAD:

I have owned an iPad pro for 3 weeks and am very satisfied with the performance and display, I have loaded a selection of what I consider to be my better images and the extra screen size makes it a perfect solution for showing images to friends and family ( I am not a pro ). I have downloaded an app called Astropad which allows the ipad pro to be used as a graphic tablet by mirroring the actual computer screen, not much experience with it yet but initial impressions suggest it will be added to my workflow.

Thank you for all the suggestions. I was initially thinking of the Ipad Pro but I would like to have a tablet dedicated to pictures only and for that purpose it's a bit expensive. My main computer being a Mac, how is it to transfert photos to Kindle or Samsung?

Some or all of the usual options are available for transferring images from a Mac to ANY tablet. Wi-Fi (may require an app on the Mac and tablet), via the Cloud (may require an app on the tablet) as an intermediary (like Google Photos or Amazon Photos or iCloud), via an SD card (most Android and Windows tablets have a micro SD card slot), use a wireless hub or wireless hard drive, etc.

If you use a Mac, an iPad Air 2 (64 GB version) seems a no-brainer.

No experience with Kindle. Samsung tablets I played with have either muted colors or oversaturated ones; none looked even acceptable to me. I am mainly a Windows person but own and use Android and Apple products. I would recommend an ipad for the colors and for the display ratio. On the other hand, I am not crazy about iCloud, lack of eternal card slot, etc.

I would get a Surface Pro as well; in fact I am using an older version of it right now. That is a computer however, more expensive, different purpose. Also, I find the Win 10 photo viewer really annoying with that bar on the top.

Worth noting is that some Samsung tablets are AMOLED. Generally, OLED's are more susceptible to image retention/burn-in than are LCDs.

A second point is that AMOLED has a wider gamut than most tablet displays. Without color management (e.g., to clamp the gamut to a color space such as sRGB), you'd experience oversaturation. Some Samsung phones do offer such profiles, and with them enabled, they can reproduce colors quite accurately.

I have an iPad 4 with Retina display. The screen is absolutely fantastic. Unfortunately the iPad is useless for most tasks and inconvenient for the rest, so I don't use it.

Examples? They sell pretty well for something that's "useless for most tasks".

I have a Samsung Tab 2 s, and I am happy with it. There are screen options which reduce saturation, but tbh most non-photographers seem to like saturated and crunchy images.

The central problem is that Android is not natively colour managed, and neither is iOS, so far as I am aware.

I originally bought a tablet (the one before this) meaning just to use it to show pictures, but I find it so easy and convenient I use it for all kinds of things now.

On Android, Samsung Tab S1 series, 8.4" and 10.5" models. Absolutely gorgeous AMOLED screens with great color accuracy and gamut, and contrast.

Actually, despite the AMOLED screen, there's no compelling reason to choose Samsung's TouchWiz bloatware over vanilla Android.

The trade-off is simply too great.
I've now owned five Samsung phones/tablets, and I have never used Touchwiz. You do know that switching launchers is free, quick and easy, right? You are highligting a problem that I have sidestepped and therefore never faced.

Not true.

A custom launcher (such as Nova) does not circumvent the well-documented issues inherent in Touchwiz, viz. sluggishness and pre-installed bloatware renowned for bringing successive generations of Snapdragon to their knees. The phrase "lipstick on a pig" comes to mind.

The significant performance gains required to achieve performance parity with stock Android can only be realized by rooting and flashing a custom ROM.

But, given that you clearly don't know this, I suspect you aren't discerning enough for this to be an issue to you. It would be premature to assume the same of others, however, which is why--in the interests of full disclosure--I've seen fit to raise this issue.
