Firmware 4 has been out for a while now. For those of you that have actually tried it, what is your opinion of the image quality when using the silent shutter versus the mechanical shutter assuming a well lit outdoor scene? If there is no appreciable difference and assuming a shutter speed faster than 1/100 of a second is there any reason not to use the electronic shutter there by saving mechanical wear and tear on the camera?

If anyone has actual samples of the same photo shot under the same condition using the silent shutter and the mechanical shutter that would be fabulous.

Thanks and have a happy holiday season.

Don't you have the E-M1?

And I wouldn't recommend using electronic shutter as daily feature, the mean error rate of 150 000 actuations doesn't come easily in normal use.

I would use E-shutter only in time lapse and when I need silence like ceremonies, sleeping subject, wildlife etc.

The IQ is the same.

If there is no appreciable difference and assuming a shutter speed faster than 1/100 of a second is there ..
I'm curious as to why the specification of the 1/100th shutter speed?

I love it.

I shot using mainly Silent(H) but also mechanical, and no difference in IQ. These were with the silent shutter-

There is some slight rolling shutter effect if you move the camera rather fast (relative to your subject) during the exposure. Other than that, there's little difference.

But I think I'll mostly use it when I need for my camera to be as silent as possible. The rolling shutter is one reason, the feedback of the camera when the exposure happens is another - I like hearing and feeling a little *click* when I make a picture.
