Having recently got the new 25mm f1.7, I've yet to find out just how good or otherwise it is optically (horrible weather, no photo opportunities much) but here are a couple of trivial observations:

That decoration ring (or whatever it's called) that bayonets off so one can fit the hood is horribly stiff on mine. Probably going to leave it off to save accidents (never realised I was such a weakling!).

The AF motor is very silent and AF is internal (of course, yet it's still vaguely surprising after the 20mm f1.7's very physical unit focus, which is also quite audible). However, I note that the aperture clicks enough that it is picked up when shooting video. Presumably that's why it doesn't carry the HD logo.

Speaking of the aperture, it's the first m43 lens I've had personally that stops down "at rest" - i.e. when powered down. There may be others of course and many other brands do it, but I noticed since it's always struck me as a good thing - cutting down the light if you've forgotten to put the lens cap on.

And very trivial, but honestly, how many different 46mm lens cap designs can Panasonic use? Each one on the 14-42 II, the 35-100 f4-5.6 and the 25mm f1.7 is quite different. I suspect this one is the cheapest to produce - no painted logo (14-42 II), no fancy metal bits (35-100).

Hi Helen,

I know what you mean about that decoration ring. I thought I was going to twist the lens into a pretzel before it came off.

I've used the lens quite a bit and really liked it at first. The ability to take shots inside without a flash was nice. However, since I've tried using it outside, I fail to see any advantage to it at 25mm over my 14-140mm as far as sharpness goes. It doesn't seem to get a pleasing color and good contrast like any of my other Pany lenses.

This is my first prime and so far, I see no advantage to primes, but I'm hoping to learn.

I think they deprecated the HD logo, newer revs of the 14-140 (rev 2 of version II) and others are exactly the same thing but matte and they don't feature the HD logo either... I guess it might've seemed out of place amongst all their 4K branding and marketing. Point is I wouldn't read much into that, some of the 'HD' lenses probably click audibly too.

Oh and yeah, Panasonic's variety of lens caps is pretty amusing... What fancy metal bits on the 35-100 tho? I don't remember those on mine... I know they've got a center pinch (PL25, 14-42 II, etc), and a flatter domed one (think I got that one with the 20), there's probably others...

And they change what they label on them all the time. Some say Lumix, some say nothing, I recall some older ones that said Panasonic or Lumix G (or X? a lens designation they've seemingly also abandoned). I bet the PL15 has yet another cap. There's a couple different 37mm caps too.

Interestingly, I received my 25 in the mail this morning and it DOES sport the "HD" logo. Right next to the m43 logo along the bottom....

The 15mm actually has 2 lens caps. A flat one labeled 'LUMIX G' and a rubber plug for when the lens hood is on.

... And am I the only one who wants a lens that suffers flare issues? Sometimes it's fun to shoot a lens with imperfections.

I also received the P25 F1.7 too. I opened the box and said, "wow, is this thing an ugly lump!" It's formless compared to the sharp lines of the fast Olympus 17 and 45, It's almost as long as the P14 and P20 pancakes stacked on top of each other.

When the P20mm arrived, I recall marching around the house holding it aloft like it was the World Cup. I jumped in the car when the P14 arrived and went out to use it immediately. LOL, the P25 hasn't even been taken outside since it arrived yesterday.

I'll take it out tomorrow.

While I use big legacy lenses, I prefer smaller native lenses though, and this one s about as big as I want to use. It's light though.

It really is rather big for what it is, definitely a case of being designed to a price point. I mean, it's larger than Panasonic's own 42.5/1.7 and that one features OIS. About the same size as the PL25 or Sigma 60mm, definitely larger than most if not all the other native f1.7/1.8 primes in the 12-45 range.

Shouldn't be a big deal even on something as small as a GM1 tho, at least IMO (I've used a PL25 on mine plenty). Don't get me wrong tho, everything else being equal I'd opt for smaller too and I treasure my 20mm despite it's one weakness largely because of it's size.

OK, I've had a chance to shoot some pictures tonight at our local xmas parade. It focuses quickly. It's sharp. It's fast. It's cheap. I like it. For shooting a night event, this is a wonderful lens.

I also brought my P20mm for comparison. The P20 couldn't focus in the dark, so I bagged it.

What more could one ask? :)

You're right of course - I finally found it! Tiny - they seem somewhat coy about the badging now. Still has an audible aperture "snick" though, when it changes. Though it's possible I had it on my Olympus when I noticed that - must check again on a Panasonic.
