not had much time with the fz1000 yet but I'm liking it. I thought I'd try the handheld night mode to see just how far you can go without much effort.

The first one is quite lovely. The two companion shots in your gallery, the one closer to the subject and the other further away, confirm my impression that this one is just right. Thank you.

First I've heard of it. What is it?

The "Hand Held Night" is a scene mode, where the camera takes different pics (like burst) and combines them to one good photo. This only works with non moving subjects.

It's a Scene Mode that takes a burst of image frames and stacks them to reduce noise and camera shake. The algorithm seems to depend on the slight jitter presented by hand-holding the camera as it doesn't appear to work on a tripod. As such, the final image will be "zoomed in" slightly as the jittery edges are trimmed.

Hand-Held Night Shot is intended for just that, but it's not limited to night time use and can be used for in-camera image stacking in any light. I've even done tests to see if it might work to smooth waterfalls (as a poor-man's ND filter when caught without), but instead it tries its best to freeze the action instead.

You learn something new every time you press the shutter

I`ve actually tried it with movement in the frame without issue . The person walking just near the crossing.

Thanks, Bruce.

Can you use manual exposure with it?
Not for my FZ200 and not likely for other models. Here are some earlier posts on HHNS:

I really like the 2 railway shots with the fog, i am a railway fan and take quite a few shots of trains and railway scenes, and find the fz1000 a superb camera for this purpose. i blew the sky in this one because i had to turn towards the Sun, however, its the train i like!
