Hello everyone! I want to start my adventure with YouTube. So I will be shooting vlogs and some fun stuff but most importantly also home-made music videos with my band. I've read through tons of reviews and I decided to buy Sony A5100... but then I've stumbled upon a Canon G7X and now I'm lost again. After watching some YouTube videos I've noticed that Canon has very similar quality to Sony while vlogging. And also I've heard that Sony Kit Lens is very bad (and I am not prepared for extra investments over 400 pounds I'm paying for the camera).

So to just summarize:

What do you think will serve me better purely for video quality? (don't care that much about photo). And also are there any other cameras (camcorders?) that can give this nice depth of field effect and cool quality. Flip screen essential.

P.S. I know that this forum might be for more advanced users and photo geeks but I'm just on beginning of my adventure. After buying Sony DSCWX350 I started to totally love the power of capturing great moments! And now it's time to upgrade.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME IN ADVANCE!

Hi. I have tested both the Sony a5100 and the Canon g7x. If you want good quality video with nice depth of field, then in my opinion, you can't go wrong with the g7x. I think it's due to the fast lens on the g7x at f1.8-2.8. The a5100 can be much better with an upgrade lense, personally I love the Sony 35mm f1.8. It stays on my a5100 most of the time. Also if you're going to be walking around a lot (vlogging), the g7x has smoother stabilization for video. I think because the g7x has built-in camera stabilization which is a little better than the optical stabilization in the lense on the a5100. You can see this in video samples of YouTube vloggers using these cameras. So for me, I love the Canon g7x for videos. For anything else my Sony a5100 is my go to choice.

In down right video quality(detail). The a5100 would beat the g7x. It shoots at a higher bitrate (50 vs 33). But if your wanting the shallowist DOF. Then the G7x with give you shallower DOF vs the sonys kit lens due to the longer lens.

Have fun shooting!

Hi,

I had the same dilemma, so I bought both cameras and did a Youtube video comparing both, exactly for video quality, (testing them side by side while running, inside the house, in dark situations, at night, texting the audio with wind, etc...) The video is in Spanish

After recording with both of them I couldn't decide which one I should keep, so I asked my viewers. Almost all of them liked better the video quality of the Canon, and I'm glad because the Canon is smaller, so it's easier to carry it around.

I hope the video helps :)

Jen.
