Hello,

could you tell me in megabyte the AVERAGE file sizes for certain megapixel categories and file types?

I am fully aware that file sizes vary wildly by image content and file type settings. I am also aware that i could check the sample images here on DPR. Still i'd like to know what's AVERAGE in megabyte in your experience for the following file types:
  • 16 megapixels JPEG
  • 16 megapixels raw
  • 24 megapixels JPEG
  • 24 megapixels raw
  • 36 megapixels JPEG
  • 36 megapixels raw
  • 51 megapixels JPEG
  • 51 megapixels raw
Thanks for your input!

You can find file sizes in the studio scene comparison tool on this site. You can see it for out-of-camera JPEG, raw and JPEGs that were converted from raw using ACR.

Nikon raw lossless compression 36MP .NEF is 46MB

Ricoh raw 24MP .DNG is 16MP

Olympus raw 16MP .ORF is 14MB

Keep in mind that average file size depends on subject matter, ISO, and lens choice.

I know Canon publishes typical file sizes in their manuals (which are available to download). I would expect Nikon does the same. This is an excellent source of file sizes.

I just looked at a recent studio shoot from a 5Ds at ISO 100. Jpegs ranged from 4.5 to 8.2 MB. RAW files of the same images ranged from 52MB to 64.9 MB. Expect larger file sizes with a 5DsR instead of the 5Ds.

might need a larger hard drive saving 65 MB RAW files !

Disk space is cheap. A 5TB drive is $139 at Costco.

My first hard drive was 20MB, and cost $2,000. It came with partitioning software because what anyone possibly use a full 20MB in a single drive?

My primary storage is a Drobo filled with large drives. As I need more space, I pop out a drive, and pop in a bigger one. The Drobo handles rebuilding everything and making the additional space available for use.
