How to set WB when using flash?

WOW! I thought you couldn't set a custom WB with the flash. I
guess it's because I'm used to setting WB with video cameras where
it takes a few seconds to work.

This is great! Tonight, first thing I do is set my two custom WB
presets for the main rooms where the action will be.

I love this forum!
Marc,

Be careful. If you use RAW it won't allow you to convert to a
custom white balance.

I know. Thanks. I have a few hours to decide if I'll shoot with custom WB in JPEG (which I don't like very much) or keep shooting in RAW and take care of WB at home.

Maybe RAW...

Er, actually, since you're already correcting for tungsten, wouldn't a true white light produce a blue cast?

I have a G2 and the WB under indecascent lighting usually works
pretty well. But I found that when I use the external flash
(440ex), the White Balance doesn't work, people look yellow as if
WB was set wrong. HOw do I correct this?

thanks,

Jason

I used flash WB setting. I'll try custom WB then. thanks.

I have been using a Kodak grey card to color balance photos for quite some time. It is pretty easy and can give very good results. I have actually used the grey card to get white balance settings for a variety of lighting conditions, saved those white balances in Photoshop, and then used them again and again. I have instructions on how to do this on my website:

Yes....I am also selling the cards on my website, but the helpful hints / instructions are free to all.

You can, of course, use the grey card when converting from RAW files, or you can use it after the fact, in getting the right white balance in Photoshop with either JPG or TIF files.
