So as best as I can guess, yes its a guess, I figure we get an annoucement on the D900 as early as next month or as late as Feb next year.

The tech in it is already well speculated, so What are your thoughts on the when and why of it?

Didn't you say you have a D810 coming next week? What the frig you thinking about a D900 for? The 810 should amaze you for awhile.

Think your range is wide enough there? Literally anything can happen in the span of 2 business quarters.

Yes, and looking back at Nikon camera releases any and everything has happened at various points in the year where as in contrast in yesteryear it use to happen around major trade shows. So sorry my guess cant be more specific. Personally if I had to place a bet I would go with Q4 in November we will get a big unexpected announcement. Maybe makes some since to counter Canon so the Xmas preorders go Nikons way.

Very clearly a D800 labelled 'D900'. Is that clever in any way? Why would Nikon return to the D800 design for a 'D900'.
And that's a D810 labelled 'D850'. For a start, the new camera won't be a 'D850'. 'D750' was used because it was start of a new series and D700 had been used already, hence thy started at a '50' rather than '100' boundary. The next camera in the D8xx series will be the D820, because that's how series numbering works. However, what it won't have is a body identical to the D810 with just the nameplate changed. This will be a D5 generation camera (major 4 year update cycle) and it's body will be designed around styling cues from the D5. You can see how it works:

The D700 followed the styling cues from the D3

Note curve under Nikon nameplate, triangular red splash, straight 'shoulders'.

The D800 followed cues from the D4

Note squared off underside to Nikon nameplate, 'smile' shaped red splash, sloping 'shoulders' plus a number of details.

We don't know what the D5 will look like, but the D820 will look more like it than it looks like the D810.

So, what was the point of photoshopping new labels on existing cameras?

Nikon has let all down by not bringing out D700 and D300 type bodies and features.I have been hunting a good copy of D700 on ebay.

No, Nikon has only 'let down' those who wanted D700 and D300 type bodies. Nikon has been great for those who wanted D800 and D7200 type bodies.

What would a D900 offer over a D810?

maybe:
  1. wifi/gps
  2. 50mp(is it needed?)
  3. faster FPS
  4. more AF grouping options
  5. more af cross points
  6. -3ev af
I'm also a newbie with the D810, few days in now. I'm in love ;-)

My guess is the D5 will be released a few months before the Summer Olympics and the D810 successor will come in Sept.2016

Since Nikon has a four year major product cycle, they are always releasing a new Dn just before the Olympics. They usually release January of February.
and the D810 successor will come in Sept.2016
Probably sooner than that, it will be quite hot on the heels of the D5 if they follow previous practice.

I dunno, but I am quite Wow'ed by my D610, got about a month ago.

Colors, DR, low light, crop ability...just wow.

As for the AF..... responsive and accurate. If I shift my camera on pan fast and jump orientation and refocus (horse running), it locks on quick, at least centre point.

Maybe folks that shoot birds need that bit extra, but for me it is great.

ONLY thing I maybe wish is that it was built as seeming hardy as my D300, strong.... had a dream a couple nights ago that it dropped and the corner was crushed... relief when I woke up ;-)

What up with that? Lol.

The only thing now is that I intend to change my D300 to Refurb D810 whenever those new ones come out and the prices drop on Refurb or good used D810's.

The D610 sensor has really pushed me to newer is....nicer to use... sorry.

And getting in wider shots with my 28-70 using FF 35mm Digital at close quarters is nice and very useful.

A few weeks ago at a (my) family thing the camera paid for itself in one afternoon..... 'never again moments' recorded excellently. Priceless images that can never be got again.

Cheers

As you state, Nikon has had significant upgrades every 4 years with a small "refresh" half way.

The in-between upgrades typically have a name which is the same as the camera it replaces followed with an "s".

The D810 breaks the routine in two ways : it is a more important upgrade than the usual mid-term refresh, and its name does not follow the usual pattern (D800s). It was probably chosen to make a distinction from the QC issues tainted D800 name. (like D610 instead of D600 and SB910 instead of SB900).

Still the name "D820" IMO does not convey well the message that we are dealing with successor to the D810 which represents an major update instead of a smaller one : D820 is as much an update to the D810 than the D810 is to the D800. Compare to D4s to D5 : no ambiguity there.

I vote for "D850" :-P .
