Tamron 17-50 is a lens I used to own, when I used Pentax, and now I am thinking of getting it for my Nikon FX camera, but will it work in FX mode?!

Does anyone know?!

It is made for DX, so almost certainly not, but I haven't actually tried it.

Thanks, David!

I know it is made for DX, but some DX lenses work very well in FX mode, like the Micro-Nikkor 40.

Zooms often have a bigger image circle at the longer end, which makes sense as zooming is making the whole image bigger. This is handy with say the Tokina 11-16, as a 16mm lens on full frame might not be covered by other lenses. Sadly with a 17-50, you may find it is only useable (if at all) at the longer end, and you probably have plenty of other options at 50mm, which will probably have better edge sharpness and less vignette etc. If you have longer DX lenses, they should give you adequate centre sharpness, and may be useable with a small amount of cropping on FX.

Interesting! What I'm looking for is a smallish zoom, first and foremost, speed not that important.

High IQ is always nice, though!

I got help from Chris about the 17-50, doesn't look good:

A smallish zoom that covers the about the same range (24 vs 28...28mm wide is what makes it more compact than most) is the Nikon 28-70mm/3.5-4.5.....it's the smallest of a trio of lenses that are very similar in quality...the other two are 28-85 and 28-105 all 3.5-4.5....the smaller aperture also makes them a bit smaller than faster lenses...smaller but not lighter...they are pre-plastic construction....metal rocks!

Some like the 70, some the 105....I'm fond of the Goldilocks version....if I had found either of the other two I might prefer them, but I got the 85 for $25!....they all can be regularly bought for $50-75....

Here's are a couple of shots taken with it...at the extremes, 85 and 28mm...be sure to click on "view @ 100%" for the wide angle (or click on the image after clicking "view original size") to see it at 3k pixels wide, half the original 6k wide image)

[I don't know why the EXIF data doesn't show for the 85, but it was 1/60 @ F5, D610 @ ISO 3200]

I have the new version with VR not as cheap as the old one but a very nice lens. Usuallya little less than half of new price. It is a fantastic lens on DX buy the way. This trick FX lens on DX body works a lot better than the other way around.

Yeah, I got that, Steve!

So maybe not the lens for me :-( !

I have an old version of 17-50 f/2.8 and I use it on my D800. In FX mode, you'll see a clear vignetting because it's not a FX lens so I use it in DX mode. This lens is sharp and I wondered if it would be a good match to my D800 and it didn't disappoint me.

Thanks to the insight! So now I have to rethink my strategy, again ;-) !
