I've had my Nikon 5700 since last July. I just received my Sony 717 that I wanted to try because I heard so many good things about this camera. The 717 is definitely a keeper, its an amazing camera.

I only wish Nikon and Sony would merge one day and build a camera with the best features of both cameras in it. That would be one heck of a camera.
Love the 717

Andrew,

Another perspective: Competition and choices that are truly different can be good things. Having two strong contenders (a) battling for market share, and (b) innovating in order to set themselves apart means the consumer wins.
Congrats on getting a terrific cam. Enjoy the heck out of it. I do.

I quit using both my CP5000 and Cp5700 after getting the 717 and the 2 accessory lenses. A very nice camera.

Hi to CP5700 owners! I'm so glad to hear you love the 717 because I just purchased one for myself for Xmas. I haven't opened it yet (can't wait till tomorrow!) but I have been worried that I didn't choose the CP5700! I was so torn between the two cameras. Glad to know I will be happy with my choice. What are the main pros regarding the 5700? In other words, what am I missing?

Jane, you will enjoy your 717 Santa is giving you for Christmas. Because it was a tossup when I bought my 5700 last July, the 8x lens made up my mind and I don't want to start a turf war. A couple of the pros for the 717 are there is much less post editing in Photoshop and this camera takes pictures in complete darkness. One other thing the 5x lens of the 717 isn't to shabby either.

Merry Christmas

I sold my 5700 about 3 weeks ago. I got tired of having to be a magician to take pictures in low light/contrast situations. The Sony 717 will take pictures under any circumstances. I will however miss the nice compact design of the 5700 and also the great 8x zoom. I am still not sure if I will be happy with the 717 design. It reminds me of my Canon T70 with the large zoom lense I use to complain about lugging around. That is my only gripe about the 717. It is bulky hanging around your neck while sightseeing. Everything else about it is great. If the size is not an issue with you, then you definitely made the right choice. Nikon needs to do some more work to the 5700 before it will be the better of the two for amateurs like myself.

Congradulations Andrew and Jane on your 717. You will like the camera. Iv'e had mine for almost 2 months, easy to use, superb pictures right out of the camera, excellent low light focus, very good battery life, what else can I say that hasn't been said. Good choice.

I have this gut feeling that Sony will not dissapoint when they officially make an anouncement at the CES regarding the memory stick capacity.

Merry Christmas and happy shooting.

I just picked mine up. I'm not waiting for Santa - it's already the 27th somewhere. LOL It's charging right now and I can't wait to play with it. I did lots of research before I made up my mind so I'm glad I went with the 717.

Thanks to all of you who have supported my decision to go with the Sony 717. I am so excited to start using it. I'm sure I'll have lots of questions and need some advice now and then. I will post photos as soon as I get settled with my new "buddy".
Thanks again and happy holidays to you all.

Boy did I have a senior moment - I meant it's already the 25th somewhere in the world, not the 27th........
