Hi folks,

I was doing some porch sittin' and I decided to try this Pentax K-50 + Pentax 1.4X HD AW teleconverter + Sigma 18-250mm HSM Macro. This man and woman was having trouble opening the lock on this storage area. The subject distance is about 65 feet (20 meters). I had no problem focusing and locking on. I was blown away when I opened the image on my computer. Make sure you view the Original Size of Image #2 below. It is a full size 100% crop. Look at the hair, the watch, and the stitching in the jeans. I think this rig is worth further study. What do you think?

Image #1 - Having trouble opening the lock on this storage area.

Image #2 - 100% crop from the previous image.

Cheers.

Ron

K50 is a very good camera Ron.

Hi Ron,

Is that the newer sigma lens (with macro??) or the older one with OS. Was considering getting the older OS version for my wife - She likes the having the view finder stabilised, so doesn't like using my PENTAX-DA 55-300mm. There are still a couple of places here in the UK that I can buy the old one new.

I have read that the new one produces a sharper image. Any musings on your part would be appreciated.

Cheers,

Michael.

The new one without the OS.

I read somewhere that the new one, without OS, is the best one.

Yes, I would like to have you look into this combination more. If it works this good on a K-50 it should work as good on a K-5 (I would hope).

While I mainly use primes for the more serious photos (max. IQ) for hiking and other situation where I do not want to carry around several primes the Sigma looks like a real viable option.

Look forward to more images from this lens. I am very impressed!

I will check it on my K-5 just for you Jim.

Yes I know Dean.

I was just surprised at the Sigma 18-250mm + 1.4X doing so well.
I was just playing with this combo and my results are different to yours

At wider angles it was OK but @250mm it did the standard shift left shift right shuffle and no lock.

Optically it does surprisingly well as yours does.

I was deciding whether to carry the da*300 for a trip to the everglades coming up...... it will be coming with me :D

FWIW: This Sigma 18-250mm + Pentax 1.4X HD AW (or any 1.4X Pz_AF teleconverter) does not work worth a damn at short subject distances. Will not focus. If you decide to try it then try it at 35 feet to infinity.

EDIT: Also note that for those short subject distances that it does not lock focus (racks back and forth) that you can use Catch-in-Focusing if the light is enough to trigger the shutter.

Let us know how it works for you.

I've done very little testing of this rig myself.

That`s impressive, My wife uses my Kr a fair bit and perhaps that would be a good lens for her.
H Richard,

If you decide to get one then I suggest you get the newest model, the HSM version. I have read that the previous model, the OS HSM version, is not as good. Also, the OS HSM version is bigger and heavier.
