Time to jump to a 70D now? Or wait....

I have been thinking of upgrading but have not been able to make up my mind on the timing or format:
  • wait for the 80D or 6DII (both will come with more modern sensors for one)
  • get the 7D2 now (great for birding but not just into that)
  • or wait for RX100iv (or some such so I have a portable camera)
Adorama has this pretty compelling deal - 70D with Pixma Pro-100 - everything for $789 post rebate. I just could not resist and have ordered it - but is that the right choice? Should I just have waited? I can still cancel the order !

I have a 700D right now and in all fairness, have not reached the limits of the camera so I don't feel I am being hampered by the lack of equipment.

What do I need?
  • light performance - so a 70D may not really address that and I might be better of waiting for 80D or getting a 6D (or even 6DII)
  • pocketable which the 70D does not address either. I tried the Rx100iii but just could not like it so am hoping Canon will come out with a new model or perhaps the Rx100iv will address some of the usability issues of RX100iii.

Obviously it's the right choice, those other cameras don't exist.

Then why are you ordering another camera?!?

Don't worry, you made the right decision. There is always something new/better just around the bend. The 70D is a great camera and if you wait for the 80D, you'll wish you waited for the 90D. You will have the 70D in hand and you'll love it, I couldn't be happier with mine.

I actually just ordered the 70D and Pixma bundle from Adorama today as well. I was on the fence about waiting for 80D as well, but it didn't make sense for me to continue waiting for a camera that might not be available until next year. I also really needed to upgrade my 1000D and the price of the 70D was perfect at this time. I think we both made a good decision with the purchase and I am anxiously awaiting the delivery of the camera. The only thing I am second guessing is not getting an STM lens with the bundle. Anyways, good luck with your 70D!

I sympathize, because I too get Gear Acquisition Syndrome... a whole lot. But if you are happy with your 700D, and you are not bumping into any limitations with it, I recommend keeping it, cancelling your order, banking the money and wait on the next most glorious model coming down the pike. As soon as you get frustrated with the 700D, pounce on the current marvel.

That's how GAS becomes a pleasure, and not a yearly burden. ;)

Actually that's a lie. You'll just end up spending any money that you saved on other useless gadgets such as lenses and flashes. Woe is you!

I'd like to echo what snofox said and like to add that if you really need low light capabilites then the 6DmkII would be the one to wait for but the rumour is that it may not appear until early next year - 2016, or if your really lucky end of this year. Enjoy playing with the 700D, it's capable enough for some good images and before you know it it will be 2016 and you'll have more money saved for the new body and extra bits too.

I'd cancel. Yes, it's a better camera. But it doesn't meet any of the needs you're looking to fulfill where your T5i is lacking.

Taken from an MMA article and I think it applies on DPR:
"My point is, we all do this. And we feel entitled to do it, because we think we’re smart people with smart opinions. If we also happen to be paying customers of the thing we’re opining about, then forget it. How obnoxious we feel entitled to be is directly proportionate to how much money we’ve spent." - Ben Fowlkes

If it was me i would get some new glass..i dont think you will see a massive IQ difference between a 700d and a 70d..in the real world ...if it was me i will have to have a 24/28-70mm F2.8(or if you deffo not going to go FF a canon 17-55mm F2.8 IS) and later a 70-200 F2.8 ..Just having fast glass will improve IQ with a lower ISO alone never mind the better creative control you have with depth of field and an optical improvement...L glass is forever...bodies are disposable.....(he say owning a 5Dc)

You say that you just ordered the 70D, then clearly give reasons why this was a poor decision.

This is a great example of GAS run amok! (we used to call this the UMF - the unseen mystical force that makes us buy things we don"t need).

"But it was such a good deal!"

Thank you all for the feedback. This clearly was NOT a good decision at all. The price was just so, so tempting and that moment of weakness overtook me.

As noted, it neither improves the low light performance nor portability in any significant manner. Will wait for 80D/6D2 and/or G7X (or RX100 iv) and see where that goes.

The suggestion for better, faster glass is certainly worthwhile and will investigate that - thank you for the recommendations of specific lenses. Will probably wait a bit to see if I go with FF or crop.

Thank you all.

80D might not happen any time soon. Canon seems to be concentrating on updating all FF.

LOL! You were a victim of the UMF, not your fault - we've all been there to some extent.

At least you were able to remedy the situation and cancel the order. Be patient, and create some fine photos with the very capable gear you own. Good photos are between your ears and eyes, not in owning the latest gizmo.

Try a 24mm 2.8 or a 40mm 2.8 on your 700D and then see if that's not small enough.

Sorry, but you did not get an authorized dealer, new in box, 70D for "$715". And the Pixma 100 package deal is $1200, $950 after rebate.
I ordered mine for $1,039 which after rebate would have been $789. With a printer !

Sweet, sweet deal but I did return it.

I really do mean pocketable. I got the RX100iii - it was small enough in height/weight but too deep still. Plus I just did not like the non-linear focus etc. though probably would have gotten used to it. I think RX100 iv or Canon S120 is what I am thinking. First for probably pretty decent IQ etc. or S120 (or successor) for the ultimate portability.

Where did they state that? They just launched 2 35mm dslrs abd 2 aps-c dslrs. Some talk of SL2 later this year.

I'm considering a 70D but would rather get an 80D with improved dual pixel since 70D was their first try plus more extras.
I don't think we'll be seeing a replacement for the 70D for a bit. Heck, they still have the 60D listed on their website as a current model!

Since the dual pixel technology is the same on the 7DmkII, they're just not going to cannibalize that camera for a new XXD model just yet. What improvements could they make? We've already got the 7D AF on the 70D, so they can't take the mkII AF yet. They can't have a second generation sensor until well after the 5DR is out, so about all they could do would be to give us a new DIGIC. Big whoop.

The 70D is a steal for the prices out there right now, so I think anybody jonesing for an XXD would do well to pick one up when they hit one of those threshold prices. It dipped below $700 a few weeks back, and with a Pixma Pro 100 - if you want a printer that's pretty darned good. Or, you can pick up a Pro 100 on craigslist new in the box for about $150.

I'm really glad I got mine ($715) and when it hits that price it's almost a toy. It's a huge improvement over the 60D, and is nearly identical in layout and functionality to my 6D which is uber handy. It's also a fun camera as it's so versatile. A perfect camera would be everything the 70D does with a 6D sensor.

I'd expect it's going to be close to a year until we see the 80D if not longer. The 60D is certainly going to have to hit official discontinued status first.

Some of us got 70D with 18-135 IS STM refurb kit for $760 + tax from Canon. During black Friday Canon flipped lot of these kits for $800 + tax.
