Hi
I have my dads old camera above. Probably unused for about 1-2 years. It wouldn't switch on so I charged battery, camera still wouldn't switch on. Assumed battery needed replacing, bought new, still won't switch on, charged, charge light went green after few minutes. Camera still didn't work, accept flash would pop up and digital numbers visible through lens. Screen won't come on and can't take pictures, charged for even longer still the same. Is a new charger needed or is camera broken?
Thanks

If the battery charges very quickly, it can be a sign that the battery has gone bad. Try ordering a new one. You can buy off brand batteries much cheaper than canons. Sterlingtek is a good choice (I'm not affiliated in any way).

When you see numbers through the view finder, the camera does come on and the battery and charger are "fine". That a new battery gets the "green light" after just a few minutes of charing is not abnormal, batteries usually are charged when you buy them. Silly question: Have you used this camera before?

The LCD does not come on, you say. Does absolutely nothing show when you turn the camera on? Does the LED light for the SD card light up when you remove/insert the SD card?

The light is located on the bottom right, next to the trash can symbol.

Does the DISP. (display) button turn on the LCD screen? It is the 2nd button of the two top left buttons above the screen. The DISP. button is used to switch what the LCD shows, and to turn it off.

LCD does not come on no matter what I press. Will check again when I'm home and get back to you.
No I haven't used it before and sadly my father is no longer here to show me how he used it
Thanks for your reply

Is anything blocking those two little sensors to the right of "Canon" and below the viewfinder?

Will check
It's not the battery or charger. Got new ones and still no joy. Flash pops up, digital numbers visible through view finder. Won't take a picture and display won't come on.

Do you have the manual for the camera? It may or may not be of some help in figuring out your problem.

If you don't you can download a PDF copy here: Canon 450D Maunal

Yes. Is it a camera.worth spending money on to repair?
I can't decide on that. I don't know what is broken, and what repair costs would be. And the camera may have an emotional meaning to you too. EOS 450D's can be found pretty cheaply 2nd hand, it is a 2008 camera and has had many updated follow up models since then.

It's probably only worth repairing if the cost is low and you want to keep it for sentimental reasons. Today I saw a used 18mp Canon T3i (600D) with a 18-55mm IS lens offered in our area for only $300 (USD).

If you can't get it to work, you might consider taking it to a camera shop and ask them.
