Hey everybody,

Could you please give me ideas on how to set up my new Voigtländer 0.95 25mm on my E-M5ii?
  • For image stabilization, I read that I was to go to the menu summary, go to "image stabilizer" at the bottom left, then click the "info" button, and change the focal length. BUT, "25mm" isn't listed. Is choosing "24mm" OK?
  • When I focus, all I see is the subject coming in and out of focus through the lens as I turn the focus ring. I don't see magnification nor focus peaking, despite both of these being turned on.
  • Lastly, which of the "PASM" options do I choose with this manual focus lens?
Any other feedback relating to settings for the E-M5ii with this lens on it would be much appreciated!

Yes, you choose the closest focal length number that matches your lens. So far, so good.

Since the lens doesn't communicate with the camera, you have to invoke magnification or FP manually (assign either to buttons to toggle the assist on/off).

Aperture Priority or Manual modes work best.

For IBIS I tend to choose the next highest focal length…28mm in this case. But 24mm should work equally well.

With a fully manual lens like the Voigt you must enable magnification manually. For this I use the button near the shutter that, by default, lets you adjust the camera's JPEG tone curve. I set it to switch on the manual focus rectangle with one push and magnify that rectangle with a second push. Tapping the shutter button turns off the magnification. There are other buttons you can use for this. I have peaking linked to a button as well, so I turn it on or off as desired.

Use whichever of the PASM options you'd typically use. Note that in Shutter priority the camera can't control the lens' aperture, so this gives you the equivalent of manual mode with Auto ISO and exposure compensation capability.

Thank you so much for your help! I got the lens from Amazon this afternoon. Got your advice. Two hours later shot this:

Love this camera and lens! :-)
They seem to love you also. That is a really nice video. Nice mood, nice atmosphere and nice model. Bravo!

Hi

I like the video also. I have the 17.5mm but have never tried any videoing. maybe I should try!

All the best

Forgot to mention one thing that caught me off guard.

Manual focus ring direction. Yikes!

My E-M5ii and Fujix100t are both set up so that when you twist the focus ring "forward", or "clockwise" (from the perspective of the back of the camera), the focus point goes outward.

So, of course it is now stuck in my head, "forward, forward", "backwards, backwards". If I'm not mistaken, the Fuji and EM5ii come that way by default.

Doh!

This lens is the opposite and of course you can't just tweak a software setting to change it.

Is the manual focus "twist" behavior this same way with Leica lenses?

Yes, assuming you mean Leica M (rangefinder) and R (SLR) lenses. Nikon & Pentax lenses, though, focus as you've become accustomed to. Owning camera systems using both focusing directions, I have to do a mental reset each time I switch from one type to the other. ;-)
