Had a problem with the lens not retracting and freezing the camera. Contacted Canon and they sent me PrePaid postage to send it for repair, Turn around was 8 days and the camera was completely fixed for free. Greatest camera service ever experienced

Hold old was your camera? Was it still under warrantee?

I had the same problem with my Canon S100, which is very common with the earlier production of that model, and had the same great service from Canon to fix it.

It's my recollection that Canon has agreed to repair this particular problem with the S1000 regardless of whether it's still under warranty since it's considered a manufacturing defect. Contact them on their website for further information on getting yours fixed at no charge.

The vulnerable copies have s/n's starting with 29xxx to 41xxx. Mine, a #29, failed twice and Canon fixed it twice for free; the second time was past warranty. When it failed a third time I fixed it myself (a loose ribbon connector near the lens). The fourth time I gave up because my wife gave me her newer s100 after getting an sx700. I used my s100 so much that the black paint was wearing off and showing the metal underneath.

Was 8 day turnaround from the day you sent it out to the day you received it back? If so, do you know how long it took to get to the service center. I sent mine out Tuesday and it made it to the factory on Thursday. If I get lucky like you then maybe I'll have it for Memorial Day weekend of which I'm going away but I'm not getting my hopes up.
