I think 60mm is too limiting on a full frame sensor. You are simply just too close to any subject that moves, even moves in a breeze. But on DX, 60 becomes 90 and suddenly things are easier.

This lens gets the nod however because of it's modest cost, but totally immodest performance.

It's only competitor is Tamron's 90mm (for a Nikon body, IMO), the lens I'd buy for an FX sensor.

Keep it brief. If you want true 1 to 1 macro on a DX body, at sensible cost, with beautiful sharpness and colour, get one of these.

Shorter lenses are quite fine for when you come to the field early enough, and catch the insects just waking up and warming. The longer macro lenses are harder to keep stable, especially at higher magnifications. I immediately noticed it from 60 to Sigma 150, then even more so with Nikon 200/4. Generally I think I like longer macro lenses more than the shorter ones, but for some it is how you use it.

This isn't even the best 60mm macro lens from Nikon, but it's still a very good lens.

You missed one. the Sigma 70 is sharper than either Nikon 60 and depending on which reviews you read equal to or sharper than the Tamron also on a crop sensor it's 105 which is pretty much the standard FF macro lens. B$H still has them new and some good deals used.

My apologies Paulski...I was adding kit in a rush yesterday. It is the G that I own. Sorry to all for any confusion.

While i do not own it, the Tamron 60mm macro F/2 is one hell of a lens considering it can also be used for portraits well on DX. No other macro lens offers this fast aperture, however the drawback is that it does not focus as quickly as silent drive motors.
