D700 sub command dial

I have a problem with the sub command dial on my d700. When the dial is turned to change the aperture setting the displayed aperture is erratic and and sometimes requires multiple turns to move just a half stop. It also can change in the wrong direction i.e. when going from 5.6 to f8 the display shows 4.8.

Anyone experience this issue?

It's a well known issue. Mine had it, but strange enough it's gone again.
Try and clean it?

My D3 had this fault- it's a simple replacement of the dial, shouldn't be expensive.
