What does one do?

Wait for the refurbs (if there are anymore), wait for the price to drop on a new unit, or find the cheapest price for a new one now?

One good thing about buying new, is the chance to buy a 3 yr extended warranty.

One GREAT thing about the refurbs is the price.

One bad thing about waiting for the prices to come down is that it might not happen for a while.

Opinions?

Here they come, duck!

If you need it now, buy a new one.

If you can wait a while, get on somebody's list for refurbs (if they're even taking names any more) and wait a while.

Time is on your side, UNTIL they announce that there are no more. Then supply might get tight.

I would get on as many refurb lists as possible, if you can afford the time.

If you can't, what I would do is buy it new from the cheapest "reputable" dealer you can, avoid sales tax and buy it with a credit card that offers some type of low price protection. The price will most likely come down in the next 60 days. That's what I would do if I couldn't wait. If I could wait 2 weeks, I would get on several lists if possible in case more refurbs come in. I would also stay posted on these boards in case someone who bought a refurb 1D is moving up to a 1Ds and wants to part with it.

Ps. I finally got my Metz54 working on the 1D. What a great unit! Thanks!

I'm one of those lucky ones who has a refurbished 1D on the way, so it's easy for me to say wait, but I'd be surprised if you don't see big rebates on the 1D being offered next month. Notice I didn't say I'm betting... just that I'd be surprised.

Remember B&H had these refurbished units they were offering for $3500, then Samy's for $2500, then Canoga for $2700. There may well be others. If you get real active and call around, you might get lucky and find one.

If you don't need it now, I'd wait a couple months and see what happens. I think Canon is going to replace it in February with a few more pixels. That's my guess. Refurbished units usually start showing up in large numbers just before a model change.

Actually only Samy still has the list open, when i called Canoga they said they will not be getting any more Refurbs.

i'm on Samys' list but i think that is the only place with the 1d refurbs.

or does anyone know any other places ?

Well, looks like Samy's is the only list right now. So I might have to just wait it out for a while and then make my move.

Kevin,
I'm glad the Metz is working out for you, I think it's great too.

What do you think will happen when they finally pull the plug on it? Massive rush to buy them, or everyone wanting the new camera?

Who knows!

I bought mine from National Camera Exchange, 1-888-873-1979, in Minnesota. The bad news is they are charging $3795, but they only charge $10 for shipping, and add in 15 month warranty 3 plus a 12 month extended warranty. I had called Samy's but they were not encouraging (the email from Michele said there were so many waiting that she wouldn't add me to the list) so I went for the high price package on 12-6-02. Got serial #013XXX in the white box marked as refurbished demonstrator. It was mint, all parts including the hand strap. No dust, front focus, firmware 1.3, etc. It might as well be new, and still cheaper that new.

I talked to Samy's tonight and got on their list. They said they had 30 people ahead of me and wouldn't guarantee anything. It's like D60 time all over again.

George,

Just checked B&H and they have 3 at $3495. Adorama has one at $3900 but they will discount some they said. When I mentioned Samy's price of $2495 they said they couldn't get close. But if you really want one there are 4 out there.
