(Best, cleanest results come with the in-camera sharpening turned off).

AMOUNT: Amount of sharpening to be applied (0-500%).

RADIUS: Width of sharpening line (halo) that is to be applied to highlight edges.

THRESHOLD: Degree of edge distinctiveness required before sharpening will be applied to any specific edge within the image (raise Threshold to reduce application of sharpening to small, unimportant edges and noise).

PROCESS:
1. Change screen view to Actual Pixels (100%).
2. Open USM dialog box (Filter> Sharpen> Unsharp Mask).
3. Change settings to:
a. Amount: 500
b. Radius: 0
c. Threshold: 0

4. Adjust Radius up as much as possible without causing halos around edges (.3 to 1.0 - depending on size of image). I try to stay in the .3 to .8 range for normal sized images, if it's a large file I'm sharpening (i.e.: 11x14 @ 300 dpi or larger) I might go up to 1.0 or 1.2, If you start to see a "halo" around the edges then back it down until they disappear.

5. Adjust Threshold up to eliminate excess noise and harshness in areas that should be smooth, usually 0 to 10, stay as low as possible, but high enough to get it clean enough for your tastes.

6. Lastly adjust Amount to taste (50-500 depending on size of file) after completing Radius and Threshold above .
